Palm Desert - Palm Springs Activities

I'm visiting Mom in Palm Desert in early June with my kids (8 & 10). My nieces are coming up from El Centro to visit (9, 11, 13) for a couple days.

We are already planning to go to the Children's Museum. What other things should we do? I would like to take my nieces to do something a little special because they rarely get treats (parents don't work, looong story), but don't want to break the bank doing it. So what are some 'don't miss' sights/activities in the Palm Springs area?

What can I do next?

The airplane museum in Palm Springs is pretty cool, as is the tram up the mountain. How about taking all the girls out for window shopping and a pedicure in one of the trendy boutiques in Palm Springs?

Palm desert zoo, you can even feed the giraffes, check out the website. We also went horseback riding but that broke the bank. Have fun

I lived in La Quinta for about 15 years. There was a man made lake there that was a fun place. Havent been there in years but I guess it's still there as there is a website for it. It is going to be hot and it sounds like a fun place for kids the ages you will have with you.
Here's the site: http://www.visitpalmsprings.com/overview/play/lake-cahuil...
Also, the tram ride is pretty fun. It's much cooler at the top. I dont know how you all are with elevation, but I actually passed out on the way up... and I was only in my 20's! It was weird. It's pretty up there tho.
There is also a nature reserve somewhere around there, I cant remember where tho, but I'm sure with some research you could find it. It has lots of the reptiles and native rodents, foxes, birds and such...
Have fun, and take extra deodorant ;)

There is a Joshua Tree botanical garden/desert museum type place that is supposed to be really neat. I have an aunt who used to live there and I'm sorry to say I never made it there, but I really regret that and I've heard good things about it. We also enjoyed the tram that someone else mentioned. Can't remember which days or the exact location, but there's a huge flea market that the kids might enjoy for inexpensive t-shirts and souvenirs.

Knotts soak city is there... also on Thursday nights on Palm Canyon Drive there is a huge street fair deal that is like the biggest farmers market you have ever seen. My kids love going to it when we are there on a Thurs. :)
