I A. trying to get feedback on removeable palette expanders and non removeable expanders. My son needs one and one orthodontist uses one type and the other one uses the other type. I have no knowledge of this device. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

My son was 9 at the time. We decided on the removable palette expander. It's amazing what a wonderful job it has done. Sure it took some getting used to. My son had the responsibility to clean it, crank it, and keep it in his mouth; which he did! It's well worth the results! Good luck!

i think it depends on the age of your child. I had a removable expander when i was about 15. I could clean it at night and turn the key once a day. It was pain free apart from the initial fitting and it worked great. I kept it in and complied very well b/c i wanted my teeth to be straight and pretty. I was definitely motivated!

Dear M.,

My cousin had this and the roof of her mouth BROKE.
it was horribly painful.

Make sure your MD has experience, and talk to other moms whom this Doctor has treated with this expander.

Good luck

First my daughter then my son - both non-removable. I think you should go that way cause they will take it out and you won't even know it. You would think that a 13 year old could keep her retainer in - but she doesn't - we have to be on her all the time - I wish they could glue it in. She actually broke it and we had to re-fit it - pain in the butt......I say non-removable and good luck!

My son had an expander in 6th grade. We went with the removable one and loved it. He was able to keep it clean and the cranking was easy since you did it outside of the mouth. He wore it all the time and was able to get it done in just 2 1/2 months.

It is important that you choose a good orthodontist. I used Dr Arvey at Fanders Pediatric dentistry. He was great ans I would highly recommend him.

my son had the permanent type.. and it was easier to keep in because he couldn't take it out. It's uncomfortable at first.. and probably if he had the removable one he would have taken it out.. he got used to it.. (he had to) and I turned it every day.. until it couldn't turn anymore.. then they left it in about 1 more month to make sure his mouth stayed expanded..they took it out.. and it worked great. I would go with the non removeable.. so your child can't complian and then take it out.. this way it's in and it has to stay in... good luck

As we are in the midst of three kids in various stages of orthodonture, I have found that the less they can take out of their mouths, the better! It doesnt' get lost, or broken, or not worn, it just stays there and does it's job! I had a non-removable palette expander when I was a kid (not the tighten-the-screw-every-couple-of-days one), and it was just fine. Good luck with the decision making!
