Hi Moms!
My husband wants to paint some trim (latex paint) in the house today while the girls are napping. They are 5 months and 2 years old. Is it safe for them to be in the house during this? They would obviously be sleeping in different rooms than where he is painting, but we have a small house and it's winter so the windows are closed.
Thanks so much for your thoughts!

I would opt for a brand that has a low or, better yet, NO VOC content. No, paint fumes are not good for anyone to breathe. They off-gas for a long time.

Lowes carries Olympic and we loved it....almost NO fumes. Home Depot used to carry Fresh Aire, a no VOC paint that we used in the nursery. They are both awesome.

There are just so many toxins everywhere that we think it's worth avoiding them whenever possible. In this case, it's very possible.

I wouldn't let him. I would have him paint when you aren't home, or at least when you can open the windows.

I think it would be safe. If he hasn't bought the paint yet, he could get the type that has low volatile.........(can't remember what they're called) and there will be not much odor. Painting just the trim is also not much odor.

I keep reminding myself that small amounts of nearly everything is not dangerous and is of very little concern. It's the large amounts that build up that cause difficulties. So a small amount of paint today isn't a problem. A problem may be large amounts of paint over several days may be a problem for babies.

I also remember the time when we didn't know so much and nearly all of us grew up just fine.

I have high sensitivity to a lot of different paints and plain old indoor latex paint does not bother me in the least.

Spend the extra money on what Amyj156 is recommending. The kids are worth it!

Sigh. Your husband has the man gene--you know, the one that compels them to do STUPID stuff at any old time.

Yes-paint fumes are dangerous and stinky and toxic. And no- this job should wait until windows can be opened. (You knew the answer...you just wanted a bunch of other women to agree with you for ammo on your hubby, right? :)

Redirect as you would your 2-year old. Tell him to do another chore that doesn't include painting. My husband has pulled this exact thing on me a couple times and the fumes are truly awful. Now I've learned to hide the brushes and paint cans.
