Ok so I have a horrible tooth ache. My dentist was out of town today. I went to the er today for some pain releif. they numbed me (wonderful) and sent me home w an rx of tylenol 3, I took it and it worked GREAT. Was reading online though and codine is an opioid. Well every kinda pain med I have previously taken in the opioid family I have gotten a rash and hives. I havnt got it yet but am afraid to take another dose, but I oh love the pain releif it gives me. What should I do?

What can I do next?

looks like the only choice is to take the chance or suffer the pain... not great choices though. Have you tried calling the ER and explaining this to them, they might be able to call in a different Rx.....

Did you tell the ER you've had previous reactions?
If you did, that might be why they gave you something different.
Some people can tolerate codeine and not vicodin. They are from the same "family" of drugs.
I'm just wondering why you would get a prescription, take it, it worked fine, THEN look on the internet and worry about a possible reaction.
If you haven't had one with the first dose, you should be fine.
If you are super worried, then you just have to take the pain until you can get something different and return the pills you don't want to take so they can be properly disposed of.

I work at a hospital and just had to get a shot of novacaine for a tooth ache until I could get to the dentist so I totally understand where you're coming from on that point.
Usually they ask right up front if you have any known drug allergies or any reactions to medications. IF you told them, they likely took it into consideration when prescribing something.
Call the ER you went to and ask them what you should do.
No one wants you to risk a reaction, but you might have to wait to talk to your regular doctor or dentist in the morning beyond that. Or another shot of novacaine.

My cousin likes to get teething tablets and bite it right in the spot where her tooth is hurting. She says that it helps really well... Maybe try that?

Call the ER and/or pharmacy and see if they can get you something else. Near me Walgreens has a 24 hour pharmacy or perhaps there is a hospital pharmacy that will be open.

I'm just throwing this out there in case you want to give it a try but I've heard that you can dab clove essential oil on the gum to take away a tooth ache. I've heard this from several reliable sources but haven't tried it myself yet (no reason to).

If you have already taken the codiene and it hasn't given you a rash or hives yet, then it may not. If it does, rub some benedryl cream on the affected area to help soothe the reaction. That's what I had to do several years ago after I had a drug reaction following the birth of my son.

I hope you feel better soon.

Opiates are part of my pain management plan. Sometimes I get what they call 'the morphine itchies" One way to help against that is to take Benadryl along with the pain med or as shortly as possible thereafter. Other times it may require a prescription antihistamine. Some people use tranquilizers to get the body to 'quiet down' and get some relief.
Call and talk to your dentist office. Even if he is still gone the nurses should be able to help you or if he has someone covering for him while he is gone they give you that information. I hate tooth pain the worst of all the pain I have. It darn near puts me in the floor and I have to have IV sedation when they get pulled. I hope you can get in soon and get some relief.
Also a homeopathic option and this works for me for short bursts of time is to swab the area and tooth with vanilla extract. Not the artificial stuff but true vanilla liquid (the powder doesn't work so well) You might give that a try:)

Be careful with this one. Hives can form in the throat becoming anaphylactic shock, cutting off your air. I would call the ER and ask advice. If you feel the hives coming on take some liquid Benedryl. It knocks me out so I would have someone stay with you if you live alone and check on you during the night or be willing to call first thing in the morning. One of my kids breaks out from amoxicillan but not penicillan and they are in the same family of meds. So this med might be okay for you, but better safe than sorry.
Putting olive oil on hives makes them disappear. I don't know why it works but thank goodness it does. :-)
I hope your tooth gets better.

go to the dentist and get your tooth fixed. if you are in pain may be they can squeeze you in. I would not take the pain meds if you are worried about it. Try some aleves. They help with mild pain.

Hi, J.;
Your dentist doesn't have a partner for back up?
Go to another dentist on an emergency basis.
