I didn't have any cramps when I "dried up", but I do remember having them whenever I nursed my son for the first 3-4 days after he was born. So I definitely do think there is a connection.
My son is 10 months old and for the past couple of months he was breastfed morning and night and had 2 bottles of formula during the day. He weaned himself off the breast because he was too impatient for my let down, so I started pumping instead. I was pumping twice a day but only pumped enough for one feeding which I gave him at night. Well anyway, I stopped pumping...I'm done! Now I am "drying out" and I am experiencing slight menstrual cramps. Is that normal?

I had pain all over both times I dried up but everything went back to normal within 48 hours. If you have not had your period yet then oh yeah this is normal. You will be back to having a period real soon again maybe within the next couple days. I do not know about other women who weaned but after weaning I had some of the worst periods I ever had. Almost like my body was saying ha ha on you for breastfeeding and not having a period, it made up for it and then some. Cramps like crazy, sweating, sick to my stomach, tired it was bad I think like for 8 days for the first two or three, then I got smart and went back on my pill to help it regulate. Hope you feel better soon.
I won't waste your time in writing the same thing as Sheryl M did but I wanted to let you know I had the same experience as her, so yes, I'd say you're normal. If it continues to the point that you're worried, it nevers hurts to give the dr. a call. Good luck and good for you for breastfeeding so long!

Hi L.,
My friend just dried out and said she had cramps as well. So I think this is totally normal since your hormones are merely adjusting to the chemical change.
Take care,
Trish
Hi,
I had the cramps as well. What helped with my engorgement was a warm bath(this helps the milk come down) and this may sound gross but I would expel some of the milk and that helped with the pain. I did try the old fashioned wrapping but that hurt so I'm not sure if it helped or not. Good luck.
Your body is probably trying to get back to normal. Call th dr. He'll want to give you a checkup just to make sure.
That's normal, Mommy. Get ready for the return of your monthly buddy! :)
i just had the same experience with weaning and cramps, so i hope it's normal. i think it's just the body getting back to normal after breast feeding.
