Pain in the Leg

My son has been having a weird pain in his leg. He doesn't complan about it during the day, but only when he is tired. He shows me it is right above his knee on the back of his leg. He asks for me to kiss it, that only makes it feel better for a few seconds, then he is back to complaining about it. Sometimes rubbing it makes it feel a little better. Does anyone have any ideas to what this is, or how I can help him?

What can I do next?

Hi. My son also complains of pain in his legs of an unknown origin, I still don't know what it's from but I have had them as well. My son started telling me of this at a very young agw and now he is 8 yrs old. I don't know what it is or what causes it but I do know that if you take a damp hot washcloth and lay it on the spot it helps the pain go away. Hope this helps your little guy. L..

take him to the doctor. if he can tell you where it hurts then thats pretty good but maybe it is growing pains but to make sure i would take him to the doctors to maybe get a xray. he might have fallen and injured it somehow and he doesn't remember. good luck.

I would call the doctor. My son had a pain in his leg and then all of a sudden he couldn't walk on it. The doctor said that a virus "landed" in his hip joint and takes 3-5 days to get better. No medication because if he got a fever it would have been a bacterial infection. He got better by the 5th day. The doctor said it is common but I still don't know of anyone else that had this happen. Definitely call the doctor.

Hi K.,

I have a 4 yr old that complans about her legs at night..I took her to the DR. and he said that there is nothing wrong,He then asked what she did durning the day that would make her complan at night..We found that if she runs and plays hard that day that is when she has a bad night with her legs..He told me that she is working new muscles in her legs.He said after doing every test they could that this would work it self out..kinda like growing pains.

My son just turned 3 and about 3 months ago he started complaining of leg pains that would wake him at night. At his physical this year I told the DR and she said that he is now at the age where he would be able to express growing pains and she felt that was his problem. She really felt that was his problem b/c he had a big growth spurt. So If you have noticed he is going through a growth spurt that is probalbly it but mention it to the DR at his next visit.

Sounds to me like growing pains. I think the best you can do is massage his leg or even give him pain reliver for his age. As your son gets older the pain in legs will continue as he gets older. Sometimes to if a child walks to much that can also happen. My Son who is now almost 11, had pains in his legs also. I had brought him to the doctors thinking that something was wrong with his knee, but they told me it was just growing pains. If your son has falling on his knee, then a good thing is to see the doctor. Hope this helps.

My daughter had growing pains as well. Usually only at night. Her doctor suggested getting a piece of marble and when she was having the pain have her stand on it. Yes it sounds strange but it had something to do with the coldness of the marble. Worked for her. I would say it's still a good idea to check with the doctor though

I would definately have it checked by a doctor just to be safe. Is there any swelling or heat at the source of the pain?

My experience has been that those are growning pains. during the day, kids are more active so they dont notice it as much, but as they wind down at the end of the day, all the activity and just plain growing turn into leg pains. My son gets them so bad he just buckles and falls to the floor. A little motrin and rest helps them to go away.

good luck

I am not familiar with restless leg syndrome in regards to the age it targets, but this syndrome usually is when a person is winding down to go to bed. Something you could possibly look into to.

Hello, My son is 9 and he has had pains in his leg mostly only at bed time since he was old enough to say so. It got a little worse once he started school. over the last couple years it isnt so bad. I was told it was just his muscles getting stretched. Between growing and using them. A dose of ibuprophen or tylonol when he complains about it at night will take care of it. My son does not like to take medicine so much now. So he only complains when it gets so bad that he wants to cry. Good luck and best wishes.
