Hi ladies,

I just had my daughter three weeks ago, and this time around the breastfeeding process hasnt been going as smoothly as it was with my first. She was delievered three weeks early due to me getting pneumonia and we both were in distress. It took a few days for my milk to come in but when it finally did I became engorged like I was with my first.

I dont know if it was due to all the medication that I was on to ge rid of the pneumonia but my milk supply deplinished and I have been working really hard to keep the supply going. I finally feel like my supply is up to her demand but now I am experiencing a sharp shooting pain in my breast. It is just the one breast and it is not on the outside or anywhere near the nipple. It only last a few seconds but it is extremely painful.

I had experienced clogged ducts with my first and this is not the same pain.
Has anyone else experienced something like this. And I live in a very small town, we dont have a lactation anything here so going to seek advice from a professional isnt an easy option.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. The pain lasted through the night and then just disappeared. Never figured out why it came in the first place but I will just hope and pray that it doesnt come back.

Does it mainly happen towards the beginning of a feeding? If so, it could be associated with "letdown". With my first son, I didn't feel it so much, but with my second, I had sharp, shooting pain with letdown for the first several weeks. It's normal (but not fun!). Good luck with everything.

You could probably get a lactation consultant or La Leche League person on the phone and they'd be more helpful than me! But just wondering if it is always a shooting pain on one side in every position you feed in (cradle, football, lying down...)? That would solve the right latch question. Is any part of your breast red or tender? Mastitis feels different from clogged milk duct and can feel that way. Drinking any caffeine? That can make that type of pain too.
Antibiotics and meds will decrease supply - drink TONS of water, use hand/manual pump on each breast after each feeding to fully empty breasts to stimulate more milk to be produced, and finally drink some "Mothers Milk" tea or use Fenugreek supplements regularly (whatever the package says is the max, do it).
Oh, and massage painful breast before feeding in downward motion from outer breast towards nipple, and NOT back up, and heat pack before feeding. Hope some of this helps, hang in there!

you may be getting mastitis! it's pretty much from clogged milk ducts and if you leave it be then you'll be in a lot of pain and have a high fever. i've had that when my son was only 3 weeks old and it got so bad that i had to be taken to the ER! i highly recommend you breast feed like you've never breast fed before!! drain out your breasts, if your baby isn't hungry, pump it out and save it for later.
best of wishes

I used to get that too, never figured out what caused it. Happened with both kids, only had mastitis with one.

Definitely contact La Leche League. They have a website, www.llli.org (I think). You do not have to be a member to attend meetings or get advice from a Leader.

You could also ask your doctor or midwife, or the nurses at the hospital where you delivered. They may or may not know but it would be worth a shot.

Congrats on your new little one, and on maintaining breastfeeding through your illness! Keep on nursing LOTS, and if the pain gets worse, definitely call your doc.

My first thought is that it is a clogged duct. Even though it's not the same pain you experienced before, it could just be that a different duct has a different pain.

My second thought is that since it's only lasting a few seconds, it might actually be your "let down." I remember when my son was brand new actually finding the let down painful. Later I liked the feeling. Not sure if the feeling got less intense or I just got used to it and/or built a positive association.

I'd contact LLL in your area and see if someone can help you.

Good luck,
T.

It sounds like you are in the beginning stages of mastitis. Is is slightly painful at first and then goes from there to really painful. Call your dr. and tell them you suspect you have mastitis. They will call in a Rx for an antibiotic that is safe for nursing and with warm washcloth to warm your breast before you begin nursing on that side and armed with the Rx you should be back to golden in a day or so.

I'm currently breastfeeding my fifth baby. I got several clogged milk ducts and I have pain even when they aren't clogged. For me, I need to drink a glass of water when this happens. I make sure I drink plenty of water especially after I nurse. If I get a clogged duct, I put moist heat on it, drink water and be sure to nurse the sore side first. I will sit in a hot tub and put a wet warm wash cloth on the sore side. Good luck!!
