Oyster Sauce -- Fishy Tasting?

I'm looking at a Beef with Vegetables recipe, which is suppose to have an Asian/Chinese Food flavor to it. The ingredients call for 1 tblsp of Oyster Sauce. My husband is very anti-fish. Will the oyster sauce give the dish a fishy flavor?

What can I do next?

Oyster sauce is made from oysters, brine, and some seasonings (varies from region to region). Oysters are mild, and don't taste fishy. But if you want to substitute something for it, use 2 teaspoons of soy sauce, and just a pinch of sugar. Oyster sauce has a bit of sweetness to it.

It is not as fishy as fish sauce but it has a fish taste. In moderation it should not give a fish taste at all, for that matter neither does fish sauce and lord that stuff tastes fishy.

When we make stir fry the sauce is 2 tbs fish, oyster, and soy with 1 tbs rice wine vinegar. You cannot taste anything fishy when it is done.

I thought the same thing as you, but I bought a stir fry sauce this weekend which was mostly soy sauce and oyster sauce and it tasted just like at the chinese restaurants. Not fishy at all!!

It's the one we use in our restaurant, and it has no MSG. It is made from seafood ingredients, but not fish. It gives the food a deeper more complex flavor than soy sauce.

Happy cooking!

When I was growing up and was picky, I would only eat beef and oyster sauce and not fishy even a little bit.

No, it is very salty. I don't think it tastes fishy at all. If it is available, buy the Lee Kum Lee oyster sauce with the cheesy-looking pink/red/green Chinese label. It is of a much higher quality than the bottle (same brand) with the better looking label. (I think it is red or green and gold with a panda bear on it.) As a general rule, the cheaper and uglier the label looks on Chinese food, the better it is.

looked it up on wikipidia. it does have oysters in it, but not fishy. most sauces only add oyster essence and its mostly sugar.
