I would like to start using an OPK (ovulation Predictor kit) but don't know how to go about it or which one to get. Can you tell me which is reliable and when I would need to start using it? Thanks, oh and if it helps I have just started my period today.

What can I do next?

How funny, I'm from Orem. We swear by the Clear Blue Easy OPK kit. It comes with 7 tests and 1 digital pregnancy test. It's easy to use, and the 3 times we've conceived were the 3 times we'd used the OPK's. I used Baby Centers Ovulation calculator to help determine when to test, though in my case, I always ovulated at the very end and even a day past when they predicted, so hopefully you don't get that added stress like I did!! Good luck!! :)

I have always stuck with a known brand although I can't remember now what the name was. I would say that any made by one of the companies that make pregnancy tests are fine. It's probably a good idea to go ahead and get one in the next couple of days. You usually start on day 10 or 11 for a 28 a day cycle. I always found it good to have in advance so I didn't miss the first day.

The instructions in the package tell you everything you need to know. Good luck!

Whatever brand you use, be SURE to check the expiration date. Those kits don't sell like hot cakes, and they tend to sit on the shelves for a while. I bought two and they were expired by over 9 months.

- Best wishes!

I used the ones that you can buy on saveontests.com. They are just a test strip and aren't in a plastic cover, but they work really well and are pretty cheap (truthfully, I always just collect my urine in a cup and run the test that way...even if I get the expensive ones. So using these wasn't any different for me than the ones you can buy at the store). The bonus? You can get some in a combo pack with some pregnancy tests that are cheap enough that you can be a test-a-holic if you want to and it won't break the bank.
As for when to start using it, it all depends on how regular you are and how long your cycles are. The instructions for the OPK's at saveontests.com are online and they give you an idea of what day is the best day for you to begin.
You can also find lots of good info about the accuracy of different brands of OPK's and PG tests at peeonastick.com. Loved that site when I was TTC!
Good luck and baby dust to you!

I have used the cheapest (amazon) to expensive (EPT Computerized) and they all work the same. If you order on Amazon the advantage is that they are all individually wrapped, so you only use what you need, rather than having to use a whole new box of sticks every month.

I like the Clear Blue Easy, with the smiley face. I found it worked best for me 1st thing in the morning. You just need to make sure you have not urinated for 4 hours before using it. When to start testing depends on the length of your cycle (ie. a 28 day cycle has you start testing on day 11, counting the first day of your period as day 1). It is super easy to use, and seeing the smiley face makes it kinda fun! Good luck to you!!

I always just used the dollar tree ones. They are so expensive otherwise, and I had no problems with the $1 ones. My Ob told me to start them on cycle day 11 and do one every day until you get a + or start your next period

I think we used the 1st response one. It's been 7 yrs so I'm not 100% sure on the brand. The first month we found out the hard way that when it's the darkest I'd already ovulated. Next month we tried every other day once it started getting darker. I tested every other day cuz the kits are expensive. We had success on month 2, 3 wks before he deployed.

I spent $13 on the CVS brand and got prego the first time I used it!! I was VERY lucky, as that is atypical for most people. Just buy a less expensive one, try it, and see if you're happy with it. No sense spending a lot if an inexpensive one works! Good luck and have fun trying! :)

I'd either as your Gynecologist or a pharmacist which brand they recommend. Like anything else, all are not created equally and sometimes you get what you pay for.

I think we used the First Response kit and had no problems with using it.

Yeah, I'm often a fan of generics when it comes to drugstore stuff, but I found that the generics didn't work as well, which is a drag because OPKs are expensive! I'd say pick a brand name, but try something like fertilityfriend.com to get an idea of how your cycles run before you start--that way you won't waste too much money starting early or miss the right time waiting too long. If you don't want to bother with that, there are instructions inside as Kate mentioned.

Good luck!

I've used an OPK, but I preferred taking my basal body temperature each morning. I felt like it helped me know my body's cycle really well without paying a lot for the OPKs. Just a thought. You could always do both. Good luck!

I highly recommend the ones that show a happy face when you're about to ovulate. I got all A's in chemistry, but trying to decipher those little lines drove me crazy!

Whichever one you use, make sure you use it at night, not in the morning, like a pregnancy test. The hormones that make you ovulate peak at night. Good luck.
