Ovulation always happens 14 days before menstruation, the variations in cycles happen in the period before ovulation.

Go to this website and put in your dates and it gives you your ovulation time frame and your potential due date if you get pregnant during that time: http://www.babycenter.com/ovulation-calculator

I entered your dates and this is what I got:

Based on your answers, you're likely to be most fertile from August 5, 2008 to August 10, 2008. If you were to get pregnant during that time, your due date would be May 1, 2009.
Of course, you may not conceive right away. But here's good news: 85 percent of couples who simply stop using birth control conceive within a year. You'll only increase your chances by knowing your fertile periods.

Here are the days you're most likely to be fertile over the next five months -- as well as prospective due dates if you conceive. Good luck!

Fertile days Resulting due date
September 5, 2008 - September 10, 2008 June 1, 2009
October 6, 2008 - October 11, 2008 July 2, 2009
November 6, 2008 - November 11, 2008 August 2, 2009
December 7, 2008 - December 12, 2008 September 2, 2009
January 7, 2009 - January 12, 2009 October 3, 2009
February 7, 2009 - February 12, 2009 November 3, 2009

You missed it for August but try next month!

Good luck on getting pregnant :)

A.,
I'm telling you, you have to buy the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". You'll know when you ovulated every time!

I just read about a sure fire way of telling when you can get prego. Take your temp. everyday for a month. Learn your body. This may sound grose but it also said monitor your vaginal secretions also everday. The consistency will change with your body's temp. When your temp is at its highest then you can concieve and they said your discharge is thicker during this time also.

Generally, if your cycles are regular, you will ovulate 14 day BEFORE your next period is due. The first day of your period is cycle day one, so July 22 was day one for you (not 31) which would indicate to me that your cycles are normally 30 days? If you have regular 30 day cycles, then count back 14 days before your next period is due (August 22?) and that is your likely ovulation day (August 8?). It is hard to say without knowing how long your "normal" cycles are, and it can be hard to pinpoint exactly just by counting days since cycles can vary in any given month. Try observing the physical signs of ovulation (cervical mucous is a great cue) or you can buy cheap ovulation predictor kits at Wal-Mart. There some web sites that are great resources as well. Try www.ovulation-calculator.com or www.early-pregnancy-tests.com/ovulation-calculator for more info.

Check out the ovulation calculator on "babycenter.com." It's a free site with lots of great info.

In my opinion, when you're trying to conceive the best plan is to have intercourse every other day from the end of your period until your next cycle (if you do not become pregnant). Since women's ovulation cycles can be different this way you are catching all possible opportunities (ovulate early, average, and late). I think trying to wait until you know you are ovulating puts a lot of stress on you and your partner (are we early or maybe late?) and this plan eliminates that stress. That's what my husband and I did for baby #1 and we became pregnant the first month we tried! We are about to try for baby #2 and we will follow the same plan and hopefully get pregnant again right away.

Good Luck!

My doctor told me (since I was 28-30 days regular cycle) that my ovulation cycle would be between day 13-17 before the 1st day of my next cycle.

It worked like a charm...I stopped talking pill and started taking prenatals in Jan 2001, waited (per docs order) for 45 days to really start trying)...officially started trying in A. 2001. Figured out my ovulation cycle was during the weekend I woudl be home between business trips in May 2001 and that did it. I got pregnant during that precise weekend (note: it was a week of no sex until that weekend so my H had plenty of swimmers).

If you aren't taking prenatals ... I suggest you start. And don't have sex all the time either.

It may take quite a few months to track your ovulation cycle if you are not regular (get one of those kits).

I have a friends that was irregular...but she got a book and it had stuff in there about lighting (what type to use) and some other "strange" stuff. But it worked for her. She had been trying longer that I had but ironically we both got pregnant during the same weekend. LOL.

This is sort of a complicated issue. The average woman ovulates two weeks prior to the start of her next menstrual period, but you may not be "average." I wasn't! It wasn't until I started charting each month by keeping track of my basal body temperature AND cervical mucus that I knew when I ovulated. That is the kind of thing that you have to do for several months, too, to see a pattern because BBT only tells you after the fact. I used a website called My Monthly Cycles (http://www.mymonthlycycles.com/), which is a free service to help you keep track. It took me 7 total months of trying to get pregnant with my second child, but only 2 months after starting to chart BBT. That is what really helped as far as I am concerned. Good luck!

To know when you ovulate, you need more information. You have to keep track of your cycle for a few months, at least. You have to check your cervical mucous, and take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed. The best thing to do is to keep track of all of these things, and then you will become familiar enough with your cycle to know when you ovulate. There are several websites that can tell you how to do this. Just google something about how to predict ovulation.

The way I percieve it is you're the most fertile within the 5-7 days after your cycle. That's when we were able to concieve and it worked for a couple friends too.

Everyone gave great advice but the simplest I found was going to WalMart and buying an ovulation test kit. You pee on the stick, when it turns positive you are ovulating. Have fun. =) I did it and it worked the first time. I am like you, I have never had a regular cycle ... sometimes 28 days, 31, 36, down to 25. Every month is different with me, always has been. Good luck.
