OK so I melted a tupperware bowl in my oven and now I have plastic on my oven racks. Any suggestions on how to get this off? It is only one rack, I caught it before it got to the other rack, but now I can't use it because it melts in the oven again when I turn the oven on. Any suggestions are welcome@

So What Happened?

I went on ebay and purchased a new oven rack. I couldn't get it off by freezing it and because the plastic is probably toxic, I didn't want to chance burning it off. Thanks for all of the replies!

I would try goo gone. I use the stuff for many things like this problem. Spray it on there, and scrub, might have to repeat several times and it might work easier if the rack is warm! You can buy this at any Wal*Mart. Usually near the cleaning items, but can probably be found in the hardware section too. I never let my bottle get empty, I use it all the time!

Try using a barbecue scrubber. They have a little groove just the right size for the wires. Or you could turn the oven on high and let it burn off, but make sure your house is well ventilated, since Im sure the plastic is toxic.

I would give Magic Eraser a shot - it always surprises me.

Freezing it and trying to snap it off sounds like the cleanest/safest/best option. Heating plastic is toxic and there's no guarantee you'll get all of it off (you might just smear it). Good luck!

Dear J.,
After owning a deli and catering business for more than 10 years, I've had all kinds of things like this happen. My suggestion would be to put the rack in the oven on about 300 degrees just long enough to soften the plastic again. Then you should be able to wipe it or scrap it off. By putting aluminum foil under the rack, it will catch any plastic that might drip. Whenever I've had something like candles or plastic melt where I didn't want it, this worked.
Good Luck, W.

Try removing everything from the oven except this rack...line the bottom of the oven with tin foil...turn on the oven and see if it will melt off into the tin foil.

Hi J.,

The same thing happened to me recently! My husband used a flat screw driver and scraped it off. It came off easily without much fuss.
Hope it helps! I know that you're going to need your oven for the holidays!

depending on where you live..put the rake outside to freeze in the cold weather, then take a pair of pliers to grip the melted plastic and twist to see if it brakes apart for you..
