Out of Control PMS

Help! I feel like my hormones are completely out of control! I have had horrible PMS for the past few months and each month seems worse than the last. Last month I thought I might be pregnant because I had many of the symptoms and the timing would have been right. My skin was breaking out, I was moody/weepy, My breasts hurt as bad as they did when I was first pregnant with my babies etc...but no, my period came on time. So now, I'm on day 11 of my cycle and I already feel super PMS-y. I am so crabby, I have cramps, my boobs are starting to hurt already, I feel like crying over nothing...this is ridiculous! What can I do? I tried going on the pill after I had my last baby, but I couldn't remember to take it. I've considered Mirena but I don't know if I want to deal with spotting all the time.. Does it even help with PMS?? Is there anything natural I can do? I hate this. I feel like I'm not being the best mom and wife I can be because this is getting me down so much.

I used to have horrible PMS; anxiety and crankiness etc. As an unexpected benefit to going on a Gluten Free casein free diet (to help ADHD) all symptoms disappeared. To the point that I have to mark it on the calendar now so I am prepared and can avoid any accidents.

I went to the doctor late last fall because my PMS was so out of control. I don't do well on birthcontrol, or with hormones of any kind (my tubes are tied), so I was at a loss for what to do. I needed help. My doctor suggested a B-complex vitamin and Calcium taken together. He said that some women experience great relief when taking it, and others notice no change at all. From the first month that I tried it, I noticed an amazing change. I can't even tell when I'm going to start my period now unless I look at the calendar. It's really incredible. I used to never remember to take vitamins, but this helps me so much that I never forget to take these. Talk to your doctor, and you may want to give this a try. Whatever you decide, I hope you find something that works for you. PMS can be awful.

Edited to add: I also take Magnesium as part of my treatment for migraines. I thought I would mention it since someone else mentioned Magnesium. Who knows, maybe it's the combination of the B-complex, Calcium, and Magnesium that is working? I'm just happy to feel like myself again. :-)

There are many things at the health food store for PMS. Your progesterone is dropping and your thyroid levels may be low too. Black Cohosh and other things can be taken. I just went to a doctor that specializes in bio-identical hormones and he took blood and discovered many of the vitamins, minerals, and hormones that I needed and I feel tons better.

Ok think of it this way: occasional spotting or not being the cool, fun, weepy, moody, crabby mom. I would go and talk to your doctor to see if it's PMDD and see if the mirena could help. I am on it and for me it's been rather nice. very light periods and no spotting (so far). It's worth a shot.

I would talk to your doctor to see if you may have PMDD not PMS ... there are birth controls that help manage it if you are currently on birth control, if not I am not sure but your doc probably has something to help.

Maybe it's not PMS?
Have you called your doctor?
Too young for Peri-Menopause?
Did you take a pregnancy test?

Hi! did you try the shots? or the patch? Thats a good option! One of my friends had a thing that they implant on your arm thats really tiny and it releases the hormone thats just like the pill! Ask your obgyn about it!
Good luck!!!!

I would talk with your ob/gyn. These symptoms might be a sign of something else.

BTW - I have several friends with a Mirena and thay have no spotting.

Yoga has helped me tremendously with emotions and hormones and skin. Give it a try - as well as the supplements mentioned by others.

Hi Suzanne,
A friend of mine who has a degree in herbal medicine told me to use magnesium supplements for PMS. It really took 3 months for me to notice a difference, but I only take half a pill starting a week before my period, and though day 4 or 5 of my cycle, then stop (the side-effects are a little poopy, but better than PMS!)

Also, see your MD. Sudden changes, if you are usually pretty regular and calm, could mean something is going on.

Take care.

Hey there,

I know how you feel and it's awful! I have the Mirena and ever since I got it a little more than a year ago my PMS got out of hand, and so did my skin(which I never use to have problems with), I went back to my OB/Gyn and he prescribe me some Cymbalta. For 6 months at first and then another 6, since as soon as I stopped taking it after 6 months I was yelling and screaming at my children again and I hated it. Needless to say the dr keep on telling me that it's not the mirena but the outbreaks are because of the mirena. So for the mirena, it's not necessary the answer. Even if you don't have a period or spotting(after a few months). For the meds that's suppose to help - which does a little but it's about $150 a month! Try the vitamins, it's safe and you have nothing to loose except your PMS!

Good luck!

Try zinc, it will work within 30 days. It along with magnesium are for reproductive systems. Also you can be pregnant and have a period, you should do a test to make sure. Periods change after having kids because the uterus is different and body chemistry changes too with pregnancy and every seven years. I would talk to a doctor and maybe have some bloodwork done to make sure you are not low on any vitamin levels and see what they recommend. As for periomenopause- when did your mom and grandmothers go through menopause? That can give you an idea of when to expect those symptoms.
