When my little girl was little, we had the same problem. I tried everything I could find. I felt so bad for her. We finally came across something from Arbonne. It is a diaper ointment and it worked wonderfully.. Hope this helps for you..
My 10 month old son has a ridiculous diaper rash that doesn't seem to be getting any better. He has had a bad rash like this once before and his pediatrician prescribed some cream for yeast. I tried using that same cream but it hasn't helped. We have also tried slathering on Desitin, Vaseline, and Hydrocortizone (on separate occasions) but nothing seems to help. We are thinking that maybe he has been eating too much fruit so we are trying to cut them out of his diet for a few days to see if that helps. I would appreciate any suggestions, his poor little bum and scrotum are just about bleeding they are so irritated. Help.
Thank you so much for ALL the advice, I was so encouraged by all your words of wisdom and well wishes. Josiah's diaper rash is clearing up just fine, I expect that it should be totally gone in a day or two. We took much of your advice and dipped his little rear in some baking powder, let it air out as much as possible, and kept a whole lot of triple cream on it when he was in a diaper. We also cut out all fruits for the past couple days and have just started to slowly offer him some again. I am also going to get some butt paste to use at any sign of redness from here on out. Thanks again.

My pediatrician gave me a recipe years ago. She called it special sauce. 1/3 creamy desitin, 1/3 hydrocortisone cream, and 1/3 monistat, just mix together and apply to a dry butt. Another excellent choice for blistered areas is liquid mylanta in the bottle. You apply with a cotton ball and let air dry or use cool setting of a blowdryer to dry before putting on a diaper. One of the best things you can do is let it air by allowing him to lay on a changing pad next to you.
Good Luck!
My brother and sister-in-law tried everything for their daughter. They finally tried "Butt Paste" (no joke), and they swear by it. Hope something works soon!

IN addition, just for future reference, Arbonne makes a great diaper rash ointment. It absorbs into the skin wonderfully since it doesn't contain any mineral oil. Let me know if you have questions and glad he's feeling better!!!
What you can try to do is every time that he goes #2 doesn’t wipe him just rinse him out with lucked warm water and soap. Also take the pamper off for a while every time you rinse him out (just be careful when he goes pee). And what I use is Desitin original it's much thicker and it stays on for a long period of time even when wet. That is what I did with my boy when he got a bad rash and it really helped out. It went away in 3 days. I hope this helps you
Sorry for the late post! There is a cream called Triple Paste that you can get at the Pharamacy without a prescription and it works wonders! Not sure if it has been recommended to you already or not, but when my son had a severe rash from a medication this was recommended to me and I used it every time one of my children developed a rash and it was gone in a day!
Hello,
My daughter had a horrible diaper rash after having to take medicine for an ear infection. We tried the creams 1st but it didn't work. We then figured out that we needed to dry the rash out 1st then follow up with creams/ointments. Baby gold bond with corn starch was our saving grace. Her little bottom was so raw it changed complexion. Any powder with corn starch should work. We used it for a couple of days or until we noticed that she was less iritated. Thankfully all is well now.
have you tried switching diapers? one particular brand would give my son a diaper rash, but once i switched, he was fine.
I didn't check to see if anyone posted this, but you might want to try a baking soda bath. Fill the bathtub with warm water put in some baking soda, let him soak in it for 15 minutes. Should clear it up. I am sure you have baking soda in the house.
How long has he had this? You may want to have your dr rule out diabetes. My friend's 1 year old has diabetes & one of the signs was a terrible, persistent diaper rash.
Poor little guy! :(
What worked for my daughter with her severe ones was a combination of aquaphore (lots--all day long) and tinactin anti-fungal cream (pea sized amount 2-3 times per day--especially just before bedimte). If you try that and don't see an improvement over the next day or so--I would prolly take him into the doctor.
Hope it gets better fast!!
I had a friend go through this. She said the only product that helped was called "Magic Bottoms." She said it can be hard to find so you have to call around, but she insisted it worked when nothing else did. Good luck.
C., if it's that bad, you really should see the doctor. It could be another form of yeast or perhaps a fungus or just simple diaper rash. Regardless, it sounds like you've done everything a good mommy can and now it's time to receive some professional care. My daughter went through that and I cut out all her fruit (she tought fruit was candy!!) but I still had trouble. It helped limiting the more acidic fruits, but it never went completely away. I had to use two different types of prescription creams on her and it finally went away. Good luck!
My son had a raw behind like that when he was a baby... it's terrible.
Our pediatrician suggested Gold Bond Medicated Powder on his bottom at every diaper change, and to change him every hour (I usually changed every two hours) to make sure he wasn't sitting in a wet diaper. My (now ex)husband missed the "powder" part and bought the lotion, which the doctor said we could use as well, though she wanted us to use powder. I used the lotion and it worked like magic. His bottom started healing by the next day. It did take a little over a week for his entire rash to go away. I put a thin layer on his bottom everytime I put a clean diaper on him.
Avoid feeding him anything acidic (apple juice should be avoided) because it will sting his bottom when he urinates. Keep his bottom dry and clean, and let him go without a diaper so his bottom gets some much needed air. I used to let my son go bare butt for about 20 minutes so his bottom could get some air. Wounds need air to heal. Be careful with things like vaseline because it will trap bacteria and it's warm and moist against his skin, which can become a breeding ground for bacteria.
I actually just went through this and it was not fun! I did some research online and found the following ideas to be more effective than the Nystatin that the doc prescribed.
1. Epsom salt and sea salt
2. Monistat
(I used the Rite Aid brand, same formula- lower price!)
3. Gold Bond Triple action Baby Powder
4. Desitin
First I gave her a bath with the salts. I read to measure out a cup of each salt, I didn't have enough sea salt so I just sprinkled a little bit but stuck with using a c. of the Epsom. After letting her soak a little, I let her roam free of a diaper. It's extremely important to expose the rash to fresh air. Moisture is pretty much to blame for diaper rashes. Then I put on the monistat and then added the powder. I found putting the powder on before the cream to be better. The next morning her rash improved a great deal. Over the week I kept up the routine of salt bathes, and I went back and forth between the ointment and diaper cream and kept using the powder. The yeast part of the rash cleared very quick and the redness was gone a few days later. Hope this helps and good luck with the war against diaper rashes!!!
C., I have a few suggestions. DO NOT use wipes unless he has a bowel movement and then use something for sensitive skin. My doctor told us urine is sterile and there was no reason to "clean" him up after each change. Then, make sure you let his bottom dry out completely before rediapering him. If possible because he is so irritated leave him diaperless a little bit each day. DO NOT use any powder and stick to one cream like Desitin at night. If you are using a yeast cream make sure you apply it every morning, noon and night and that his bottom is completely dry before application. Hope this helps. My son had yeast diaper rash once and after sticking to these guidlines he never had a rash again. S.
Dr. Smith's diaper cream heals my son's diaper rash. His gets bad enough it does bleed. This happened when we gave him strawberries and soy nut butter. He is one now. It takes a couple days but using it you should see it is much better within 48 hours. Other than than let him play naked outside for a little while to let it air out. Also try to briefly change diaper brands (if you use disposable). For some reason the chemicals are different in the diaper and it heals faster. So, if you are using Huggies, try Pampers for a few days.
You could try one of two things or even both. We used to have a little boy who would break out like that at our daycare because of antibiotics he was on. You can try to get some vit E pills and poke one with a pin and use the oil from it on him or you could try just plain ol corn starch or both together...Good luch i hope you get it better soon ...

My daughter did hte same thing. What my pediatrician did was to prescribe nystatin ( yeast infection cream) and have me mix it with equal parts of destitin and milk of magnesia. It worked...I don't know why, but the combo worked. Another things you should check out first is to make sure he isn't allergic to the zinc oxide in desitin....take a break from it for a week or so, and use a&d ointment....i have a friend whose daugheter would break out into almost a bloody reash because she was allergic to it..once stopped...she was fine.
This sounds exactly like what my nephew had. My SIL tried everything, and nothing worked. She finally switched to cloth diapers since it seemed he was allergic to the disposables. After several months in cloth, she finally found that he could wear Kroger brand disposables without breaking out. Another brand may work for your son, but he may just need a break from all disposables for a while. If you switch to cloth, you can end up spending a lot if you want to; or you can get Chinese prefolds from clothdiaper.com, and get nylon NOT VINYL diaper pants (the vinyl ones will fall apart in a few weeks, but the nylon last forever).
Hi, one thing in addition to changing diapers (my dtr was allergic to Huggies) limiting fruit etc. corn starch powder is just that--corn starch! Corn is a carbohydrate and therefore a sugar. the sugar content on a yeast infection, can and most likely will in a bad one, promote the growth of the yeast. The yeast use the sugar as food. My dtr's worst rash, like you describe, was when she was cutting her first tooth. Is he teething? Balmex was the only thing that helped her.
Please try Aloe vera (pure) jel. It is natural and safe and most of all it works. I use to use it on my son when he was a baby and it work fast.
For some reason my kids were always prone to diaper rash no matter what we tried or how often we changed them. My grandmother told me the best thing to do for it was use pure cornstarch. It worked like a charm. Not the baby powder with cornstarch in it, but an actual box of cornstarch from the baking isle in the grocery store. Good luck, hope it helps.
Have you tried Bordeux Butt Cream? It was the one cure all for my daughter's diaper rash. It works almost instantly. By the next day the rash is gone! Be certain to let his bottom dry completely before use. My friends mom also told me to use cornstarch with my first child instead of baby powder. Good luck. Poor lil guy sounds lkie he is in pain.
my niece had a terrible rash one time and the doctor told her momto use a foot fungus creme, i think it is called lotrimin, and comes in a tube like balmex, etc.
Hi C.
I know whith both of my kids to much fruit or sugar gave them severe diaper rash. Air him out as much as you can. If you have a backyard let him run around naked. With my kids Apples and too many grapes seem to be the culprit.
Good Luck to you.
Hi C.,
If it's yeast, a simple cream won't do enough for it. In fact, Desitin and Vaseline will make it worse. If yeast shows on the tongue (Thrush) or the scrotum area, then his entire little body is eaten up with it. He will need a probiotic immediately to get rid of it. If you think this is what it is, let me know I can recommend one. I don't know if you are breast feeding or if he's on formula but if he's on formula check the sugar content. Many are full of it and that is what feeds the yeast and makes it spread. Table foods like pastas, white breads, french fries are also chock full of simple sugar and will exacerbate the problem as well.
In the meantime, to ease the pain, I would put plain yogurt on his bottom. It will sooth and cool the irritated area. It's not a longterm fix but it will make him more comfortable.
God bless!
Hi my daughter used to get bad diaper rashes and my doctor told me to mix: Destin Original (not creamy), hydocortizone and Lotrmin AF in a bowl and apply. It cleared her up every time within a day. She explained that it needed to Lotromin AF because it is an antifungus that starts growing in the area. Hope it helps.
Hi C.,
I went through the same thing with my daughter. Two things that helped me were:
1. Go to the pharmacy counter and ask for a bottle of Resinol. (While you are there.... ask for an empty container... See #2)
2. My pediatrician told me to mix equal parts of: A&D, 1% Hydrocortisone and Lotrimin. (It's an anti-fungal cream).
I also switched from Pampers Cruisers to Pampers Baby Dry because I read that several children were sensitive to the gel substance in the cruisers. Once I got everything cleared up I used talc-free Burts Baby Bee powder vs. creams.
Too much acid in juices/citrus fruits also irritates my daughter. We just limit her oranges to 1x/day and we water her juices down a little. No problems now. Good Luck!
Hi C.:
Here's a recipe I used on all 4 of my kids; it comes from Children's Hospital.
Mix equal amounts of Zinc Oxide and Polysporin in a glass bowl. (If you suspect a yeast issue, you may also add Lotrimin). Microwave 30 seconds until thinned and then mix in equal amount of Baby Powder. Cool and spread on all affected areas until a day or so after rash has cleared.
**FYI: I use Walgreens brand zinc oxide and baby powder with cornstarch**
Also, leave him as naked as you can until the rash clears.
Good luck!!!
try using malox on it, worked every time for my DS, recommended by his ped
He needs to see a doctor today. It could be impetigo which is a strep infection requiring antibiotics. Without them he could get very very sick. It looks like sores with an amber crusty puss and is very painful. Call your pediatricians emergency number.
Also, fruit and juice are very likely to cause diaper rash by making poop acidic. My pediatrican once told me to apply Maalox to the area and let it dry. I don't give my kids apple juice anymore because the sorbital causes toddler diahrea.
Also, certain diaper brands can cause reactions. Try switching brands or using cloth if the rash keeps coming back.
First, give him naked time - air, air, air. Try a luke warm soak with baking soda in the water. I think you are on the right track with the food. I have a friend whose son's toosh would turn bright red after drinking orange juice, so you may want to go back to the basics with food and gradually add back after the rash goes away. Good luck.
is he teething?? That is when it usually gets bad. Try corn starch and budreaux butt creme.
Hi C.,
My babies went through that from time to time. If it's not responding to the yeast cream, you might try an old fashioned remedy, which really worked for my baby's open sores diapar rash. Fill a shaker bottle with plain old cornstarch, and after cleaning, just sprinkle the cornstarch. Sometimes the creams keep moisture in, complicating the rash/sores. Hope it helps! Poor baby.

Happened to me - it's LUVs with my son. He's allergic to the blue lining or something. His bum was so red he's STILL healing from a patch of skin that came off during his tooshie troubles. But I really wouldn't wait to go to the doctor. If the diaper rash lasts more than a few days he needs help ASAP, to make sure it's not something serious and that he's not in pain. We also used a wet washcloth instead of wipes until he healed.
Creams feed yeast - you need to keep the area dry. Try 20 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract to every 1oz of Distilled Water, and use a cotton ball to swab the diaper area at each change (or once an a hour if you can). Be sure it dries all the way before putting the diaper back on.
This works great, and isn't medicated, so it's very mild. After symptoms disappear, be sure to use any method at least a week before stopping. You can buy Grapefruit Seed Extract (NOT grape seed)at health stores - be sure it's the liquid, not the tablets.
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste did wonders for my son. I've got three kids and the first two responded real well to Desitin...but Desitin doesn't do anything for my youngest, but Boudreaux does. Go figure? I guess they're all a little different and kids respond to the creams differently. It's worth picking up and seeing if it helps. For us it's been a life saver. (You can get it at Wal-Mart where you'd find Desitin) Good luck!!
It sounds like yeast. My middle son was antibiotics a lot and suffered diaper rash like you mentioned. We would let him run around with the diaper area naked. Getting some air to the area helps alot. We also started using cloth diapers when it was really bad. Yeast flourishes in dark, damp areas. Cotton diapers breath so the yeast can't flourish as much. We would let him sleep for naps without a diaper. I had large waterproof mattress pads that I laid out and put him on that for a nap. I usually did not have any poopy messes to clean up but if your son poops while he sleeps then I would not try it. We also started him on eating yogurt and that seemed to help also. I would put a call into the doctor also. Good Luck!
Poor little guy. My son had issues with raw tushy that was caused by dirreah and other issues while in the hospital and the best thing I have found to keep tushies from getting raw is the stuff Vanderbilt children's hospital makes called happy hiney. I saw results by the next day...granted not completely gone, but 80% better. It has two tubes of the hospital size vaseline (about 2 oz per tube...so 4 oz in this recipe), 1 large tube (4oz) of desitin, about 5-7 squirts of stomahesive powder, and about a 6 inch ribbon of ilex. Now the ilex is hard to find, but there is a great medical supply place that has it at a resonable price and they get it to you the next day (if you order before 4pm). I was surprised to see the package the next day (you know how some places claim they will and it doesn't happen, well this place did). Ok, the website is http://www.jrsmedical.com/SKIN_CARE/MPI427181/product.aspx and they also carry the stomahesive cheaper than anywhere else I have seen. Both of these will be good for 2-3 batches of happy hiney. We mix it up and put it in a small plastic container (I found some with screw off tops that work great and you can through it into a diaper bag without it breaking open). It makes about 9 or so oz of paste.
Now the reason Ilex works is that it is a very adhesive barrier paste used for cancer patients receiving chemo and when it is applied it finds those breaks in the skin and protects them from getting attacked more.
So when you go to change her diaper after application, do not try to completely remove the paste...some should remain to allow those areas to heal. It's a nasty thought and every inkling in your body tells you to wipe until you see bare skin...but don't do it. And reapply generously with each diaper change.
Good luck,
T.
Try using a cream called Triple Paste. Its a little pricey but I have found that it really does work better than anything that I used before.
I would try some butt paste they sell it at Walmart and Target I know for sure. It always helps our sons too much jusice rash that he has gotten from the acid in juice. It is a little high in price but it works the BEST!!!!!
Let me know how it does! :))

Fill the sink with warm water & add 1/4 - 1/2 cup of baking soda. Soak his little butt in there for a while (10 minutes or so?)
Air dry. Lots of air exposure will help.
You should notice a significant difference by the end of the day.
hope this helps, it always worked for us.
P : )
We use Aquaphor and vaseline for diaper rashes. We slather on the Aquaphor and then put vaseline over that to seal it in. The rash usually goes away after just a few diaper changes. Good luck!
Hi C.,
Sorry to hear about your son's rash! I would suggest using Lotrimin AF on it layered with Boudreaux's Butt Paste. The Lotrimin (make sure it's the AF type) works great if it is a fungal rash. It worked like a charm on my son when he had an awful type rash like you are describing.
Best wishes!
T.
I would suspect yeast too. The medicine he gave you last time just might be too old to be effective, you might be able to have them call in a new tube. You can also get antifungals OTC. Have you tried tea tree oil, that usually works pretty well? Feeding him yogurt, and giving probiotic suppliments helps too
If it's not fungal maybe changing brands of diapers or detergents may help. As well as leaving undiapered as much as possible until it clears.
Hi C., sorry your little guy is having a rough time! My daughter went through this once when she was taking antibiotics as an infant. We used a bit of baking sode in a lukewarm bath (actually a few times it was the sink) just to soak for a few minutes, then let her air dry as much as possible. I know that's tough, especially with a boy, but if it's a nice day let him run around outside without a diaper for a bit. Keep it dry and don't wipe him unless you have to. I would call the doc if it's not getting any better and he may prescribe cortisone or tell you to get some over the counter, but I would check before using that. We used Aquaphor and that always helped. Good luck, it will get better!
Try using Aveeno Baby Oatmeal Bath Soak and then use the Aveeno Diaper Rash Cream......that has worked the best for us. I hope he feels better soon!
Aveno in this bath will also help sooth.
This is a old remedy. Get some plain flour and brown it in a skillet use it just like you would baby powder. make sure it is plain not self rising.
C.,
My son has food allergies, so naturally, I have had to deal with absolute worse diaper rashes. I swear by Flanders Buttocks Ointment. You can only buy it at Kerr Drugs, and it the best hands down- trust me I tried it all before finding this. Make sure to apply it liberally on the rash, and keep on applying it even after the rash subsides to prevent future rashes. It is a little expensive (about $7 a tube), but it lasts a long time and is worth every penny.
The other thing is to add some baking soda to a lukewarm bath and let him soak his bottom.
I hope this helps!
Hi C.,
I used Boudreaux's Butt Paste for regular diaper rash, but for the few times it was serious... our doctor recommended Triple Paste. Pretty pricey, but it definitely worked! Be diligent about applying it. I also second the recommendation about letting your munchkin air out for a bit each day. :-)
Good luck... I hope he gets some relief soon!
D.
Use corn starch. My son was the same way. So I got some corn starch and started putting it on him during diaper changes.
