Our Diaper Genie STINKS!

I was hoping this contraption would solve the problem of stinky diapers. My son is almost a year old, so yes, his poos are getting much stinkier. But the Diaper Genie is so stinky in his room! I check to make sure it's sealed shut, not too full (we empty when it's full) and that there isn't a rogue diaper that fell out of the bag or anything. Any recommendations? Is there a better option? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Plastic.... absorbs odors over time.
Even if there is a cover on it, the inner trash can, will stink. Over time.
Just like any other plastic garbage can.
And, garbage bags... are not impervious to odor or the absorbing of odor either. Thus, odor does escape garbage bags, too.

Occasionally, take it outside, wash it out and disinfect it and leave it out on the sun all day. See if that helps.

When mine got stinky I would open both ends and leave it outside overnight. This aired it out and it would not stink again for a while.

Get rid of it. Ours stunk, too.
Place each poopy diaper in an OUTSIDE trash bi, as it appears! Frankly, I'm surprised anyone uses them. Just the overall concept is gross when you think about it.
Even cat litter boxes are cleaned out daily, right?

Every time we take out the diaper trash we put baking soda in the Diaper Genie itself, and then put in a new bag with more in there as well. It seems to have helped keep the smell out for us.

*Also, whenever my son has a poopy diaper we flush the poop in the toilet first then put it in the diaper genie, that helps big time!*

We got rid of ours, just so nasty. Even worse.. it was given to us used by a friend. I much prefer a small covered trash can that I empty out every other day or so to the big garbage in the garage.

You need to wash it down weekly...I am so ready to get rid of ours. One and Done is right especially once they start eating solids...Why on earth do we keep pooh in our houses...In the meantime...I would wash soap and water, vinegar and spray with lyesol.

Vinegar sprayed on and let to soak in. Natures' Miracle, too, but Vinegar is cheaper. I do that periodically with our Diaper Champ, and air it outside to dry.

Get rid of it. We used to have one and it just stunk so bad I could not get it cleaned out no matter what I did! I use this stuff now that is awesome. It is called poo-poturi. You spray it right on the diaper (like right on the poo I guess), and then I throw it in our kitchen trash that has a lid and I dump that daily and I never smell them anymore.

I always did what Sarah K. said and dumped solid stuff in the toilet. If they were messy, I put them in a plastic grocery bag, tied it up and then put it in the Genie. I also kept baking soda in the bottom of it.

After you try some methods of ridding the genie of the smell, try reducing the amount of smell that goes into it. You can get flushable liners to put in the diapers and when he has a BM you can lift/dump the liner into the toilet and flush it away. Or if his BMs are solid enough you could just try to dump the solid waste alone in the toilet.

They have always grossed me out! I never registered for one. We have always placed them outside, right by the door. Whoever is on the way out, grabs the diaper and takes it to the garbage can.

My husband referred to the "stuff" removed when emptying that thing as "poop sausages"!!

We ended up putting only wet diapers in there and bringing the dirty diapers to a trash outside the house.

P-U!! :)

We got rid of that useless thing (the Diaper Genie) when our daughter was a few months old! We just emptied the garbage pails in the house every day (often more than once), and we used lemon-scented bags sometimes, too. Good luck!

We don't have any problem with our any more, and we are going on a year now. This is what we do: We throw all diapers in there, but the poopy ones get put in a sandwich ziptop bag first. When it gets full we empty it. If it starts to smell, we take it outside and clean it with pine-sol and the hose. The smell is always gone after cleaning it and drying outside.

Ours didn't stink but then we emptied it daily, sometimes twice daily when our son was new.
It's a very short term temporary way station, not a septic tank.

Oh please, there is no winning. I battled the funk for the past year and am about to ditch mine. Where I live, taking the trash out is kind of a pain so the option of just emptying the trash constantly isn't realistic, although I do empty the diaper champ as often as possible. Yes, we have the diaper champ which we lovingly refer to as "the diaper chump." I tried everything, scrubbing, disinfecting, baking soda, vinegar, and every time I empty it, I let it air out overnight or in the sun. Not to mention, the way it is designed, it is back-breaking labor to clean the damn thing. Like other moms said, at this point the stink has been absorbed by the plastic and nothing will make it stop smelling rank. All I can say is thank God my son is almost completely potty trained. Will NOT miss the diaper chump at all.
