Organic Milk Question - Elk Grove Village,IL

We have been transitioning some of our foods to organic products. We drink lots and lots of skim milk. I have been purchasing several different brands of organic milk, but they all seem to have an aftertaste/chalky taste. We love milk, but everyone in our house just says YUCK to the organic. Any suggestions for brands, etc, or ideas of why this may be.

What can I do next?

I absolutely loath milk!!! My husband on the other hand loves milk and had been drinking whole milk when we met. When organic came out I made the leap (we also transitioned foods). Of all we have tasted I can honestly say Stoneyfield is the only milk that didn't leave an aftertaste for us. It tasted "clean" if you can call milk that. We had some friends in from IL and it was interesting to hear they thought the same.

If you go to stoneyfield website you can get coupons too.

We love organic milk I do see a difference in the taste but it is a better sweeter taste then regular milk. We get the Horizon brand and also store name brands and they are all really good and we do drink the Fat Free. I think regular milk has an after taste after drinking the organic. You might want to check the date or maybe start out with 2% or whole organic then gradually decrease it to the Skim or fat free. If I drink regular (non organic) milk I say yuck LOL. Good Luck.

Some of the Factory-Farm organic brands like Horizon or store-brand organics seems to have a funny taste in the skim milk. I've always described it like I can taste the container, and I cannot drink it. You might try going up to 1% or 2%, which do not seem to have the problem, even in the big-name brands. Another thing to look into is local milk. Many organic milks are still factory-farmed, which is terrible for the animals. Many smaller local farms are hormone- and antibiotic-free, and their skim milk tends to be a little creamier, too. I've also had more luck with Organic Valley brand milk. Good luck.

Horizon i think has the best taste. I am not sure why you are experiencing a chalky aftertaste if its regular organic milk. I know in rice milk, etc. those can be pretty nasty. All organis milk is the cows are feed an organic diet w/o horomones and they dont put the stuff in the milk during production.

If you have a Kroger where you are I use thier store brand. I do not know how it tastes just out of a glass- I am not a fan of milk by itself. But in cereal it tastes the same to me. My husband has never said it tastes different when he drinks it plain. I will have to ask him...

I have been getting milk from Wisconsin Organics (available at my local Jewel) and have been happy with the taste. I don't think it tastes notably different from the non-organic brands I used to drink.

We have been drinking organic milk for nearly 10 years and I've never noticed a difference between conventional and organic, however, I have noticed a huge difference between pasteurizedand ultra-pasteurized. Perhaps you could make sure you're buying the same type of organic and you were conventional and see if that helps.

Have you considered trying milk that is simply hormone-free, instead of organic. As long as the cows have not been given any hormones or antibiotics, the milk should be very safe and healthy to drink. Both Sam's Club and Costco's private label milks are hormone-free -- and they are incredibly inexpensive (much cheaper than regular milk...let alone organic!)

I haven't noticed that, but I don't drink a lot of plain milk. My son likes Horizon Organic fat free milk. And he really likes the flavored single-serve cartons, especially the vanilla.

I personally like Horizon. Like another mom mentioned, not sure why there is a chalky aftertaste. Organic simply means that the cow wasn't provided hormones or steroids and given pesticide-free feed. Otherwise, it's the same as regular milk.

Good luck.

Organic milk tastes way better... but my family ahd to get used to the switch too years ago. We haven't bought regular milk in ages, and my husband picked up agallon the other day and nobody could drink it, it tasted so gross!

We use Organic Harvest or Stonyfield. Our grocery store also has a local brand we have bought too.
