Order of Losing Teeth

Hello,
My 6.5 year old daughter has lost her four middle bottom teeth but none on top at all. Also, only two teeth have come in on the bottom to fll the space left by the 4 other teeth and they are taking up all the space (with these two large teeth there is no room for any others unless she loses more on the bottom). I thought children were supposed to lose teeth according to how they first came in. She received all of her teeth in the usual order, two on bottom, two on top etc but she certainly isn't losing them that way. She has a dentist appt in January but I was wondering if I should call and make an appt before then in case she may be doing damage by not having space for the other teeth to come in. Her dentist has already told us that she will be needing braces eventually and a palate expander b/c her mouth is so small but I don't really see how that would help the bottom part of her mouth. Has anyone else ever run into this issue with their child?

Thank You,
Krissey

Hi Krissey,
I can't answer your questions about the order teeth come in, but I do have a daughter who had both top and bottom palate expanders. Her mouth was also tiny. It spreads the jaw and makes more room for the adult teeth. From what I've seen with her, if there is no room for the teeth to come in, they either don't, or they come in a funky way, llike kind of behind/in front of the others.

Kids will loose their teeth all in very strange orders. Not necessarily how they got them. No need to worry about that. And as far as making room for the other teeth to come in the dentist might suggest pulling some of the baby teeth. That's what my dentist wanted to do for my oldest. She was really freaked out by that though and I didn't see the point in pulling baby teeth. Her mouth is still growing and will make room and push the other teeth around. I really wouldn't worry too much about the order she looses her teeth in or the fact that there isn't room for them right now.

They lose them when they lose them. My 7 yr old lost the 4 middle on the bottom and at the beginning of the school year lost both top front teeth. As her new big teeth come in they will start to push out other baby teeth that are in the way. If they need to make more room on the bottom they will remove some adult teeth but the palate expander will definately help with the top.

Hi Krissey,

My youngest daughter will be twelve in May. She has already had a palette expander and several top braces. She had a crossbite. She didn't lose her front top teeth until the second teeth had grown in behind them. My oldest was in braces at the time, and our orthodontist kept checking her. He began treatment when the top front teeth next to the two center ones were due to come in and he saw them on x-ray. She did very well throughout the treatment. She has not had anything on her teeth for at least a year or maybe longer, can't remember exactly. Since doing the treatment, all of her second teeth have come in perfectly, except for her 12-yr molars which are in not out where the pallette expander put the rest of her teeth. He said this can be fixed fairly easily. I was told before they began treatment that 80 percent of kids who have the expander will require braces. She was very late in losing her baby teeth probably because they were not being forced out by her second teeth. Once he corrected the bite, etc., all her teeth came in where they were supposed to.

I would suggest that you consult with an orthodontist. I think that having them decide when the best time to start treatment is important. As far as your daughter having a very small mouth, they may choose to pull some teeth to allow for room if they have to. We have not had to pull any teeth to date, but it is evidence that her wisdom teeth will have to be pulled when they come in as there is limited space.

I'm not sure why her second teeth on the bottom have not come in. Teeth fall out because the second teeth have broken down the roots of the baby teeth. Your dentist can answer that question, I'm sure.

Good luck.

My 7-yr-old got and lost her teeth in totally weird ways! She has had her two front teeth in for ages, and they pushed out the teeth either side because they couldn't fit in the gap left by the baby teeth. Her dentist said that it is perfectly normal for that to happen. :)

Hi
I have 2 sisters in the dental industry and they say don't worry about making another appointment right now.. You have an appointment in Jan right? no damage will be done in such a short space of time. As long as she's brushing and flossing she should be fine.

remember too that teeth can come in in any order and teeth fall out in any order. the new teeth will come in crooked and as her jaw grows they will straighten out a bit at a time. An orthodontist is the ONLY one who can determine whether your child will need treatment. Your dentist can only recommend that she see an orthodontist.
hope this helps :)
