Oops? Sunblock on Healing Facial Scab on Toddler?

Ok. Again probably a no brainer for most of you. My son scratched himself on his cheek near the corner between his nose and eyes with his own nails :( and it bled. it formed a 1/4 inch scab. I put sunblock near it, not on it, but murphy's law, my son smeared the sunblock on it. Did I hurt him or scar him? How should I care for the scab now? Is it OK to put sunblock on a healing scab? I put neosporin on at nite or before naptime.

Thanks as usual for your supportive and insightful advice.

Sunblock on a scab? It won't hurt, but it won't help, either. Neosporin will help it heal faster. Sunblock on a scar is a good idea.

yep! healing skin is much more sensitive to the sun than normal healthy skin, so I don't see anything wrong with having the sunblock on it to help protect it.

I don't see anything on the following link from the American Academy of Pediatrics about avoiding broken skin or scars:
http://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/...

Of course, when you Google the topic, there aren't really any good, reputable answers either.

So, if you're really concerned, I'd call the nurse at the pediatrician's office to get their opinion. Otherwise, I think you're OK.

He will be fine. As long as it's not broken skin (an open wound) don't worry.

If you don't put sunblock on it, and he spends time in the sun, it will be much more likely to have a lasting scar. Sunblock helps to prevent it from scarring.

Wash the sunblock off the boo boo.
Put another small dab of the neosporin on it.

He will be fine.

This really isn't an opps!

You SHOULD put sunblock on his scar. Even that famous scar-healing cream (starts with an "M" and end with "ederma") has sunblock in one of their high strength formulas. It helps to keep the scarring down.

Do not worry too much about him scarring for such a little scratch. Kiddoes' skin heals fast and rarely scars for superficial injuries.
