I don't know what to do. My 18 month old has been sick with an ear infection for the last month. He is finishing his third round of antibiotics. Last week he did great and the doctor signed him off as finally cured. Tuesday his fever was up to 102.5 and the lowest I have gotten it is 101.2. Is appetite hasn't been affected and he is still actively playing and interacting with others. I am hestiatant to take him back to the doctor. I have been FIVE times in the last month. Do I continue to medicate with OTC meds such as infants motrin or should I take him back to the doctor. I've been told that all the antibiotics have suppressed his immune system. The days I take him to daycare are the days he seems to get a fever. I kept him out of daycare last week and his health was perfect. This week he was at daycare Mon. and Tues. and he came down with a fever. Should I take a leave of absence from work (which I can't afford) and keep him home until he's well? He loves playing with other kids and misses the interaction when he is at home. I'm sorry this e-mail is all over the place. But I have made myself ill over worrying about him. Moms please send me your thoughts and advice. THANK YOU!!

GET TUBES!! My son had ear infections off and on for about 6 months. Poor thing was just miserable between fever, and the diarhea (sp?) from the antibiotics. He got his tubes in Dec. 26 and hasn't had an ear infection since. He is back to his normal playful self. It was well worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

My son has had recurrent ear infections and I finally took him to my chiropractor. He's been doing great ever since. Now when I go in for my adjustment, I take my son (11 month old Nick) with me. My dr is Dr. Ron Marshall at Baird Chiropractic in Navarre. It's a bit of a drive and I had become very weary of chiropractors but then both my neighbors were going to him and raved about him. He really is awesome. Best of luck, Jen

B., I don't know if this will help, but when I worked at a daycare I spent the 1st year SICK. Fever almost with everytime. My dr. told me a low grade fever is good because it means your body is working up its resistance. Well after that yr. I was hardly sick ever. My Ped. for my kids has told me the same thing about them(he never likes to perscribe antibiotics)having a fever. So if your son is not feeling to bad I wouldlet the fever run its course. Don't give him Motrin etc. until over like 102. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to ask your dr. 1st though. Also make sure he is the least dressed possible to make sure he doesn't over heat and give him ALOT of water/juice. I feel so bossy writing this, but if it helps I'm glad. Maybe if he likes baths keep taking luke warm ones. Well good luck! My kids had alot of fevers groing up and I know it can be VERY SCARY. Maybe he will buld up this great immunity and wont be sick the rest of his childhood!!Wouldn't that be nice?!LOL LOL
Peace&Love, A.

B.,
The first year in day care or preschool is when your child will always be the sickest. They get exposed to everything and haven't built up any immunity. I don't normally give my kids any medicine til the fever gets to 102. Usually a cold face cloth & a long nap is all it takes. But if they are up and running around and playing normal, then I wouldn't bother with anything. Like the others have said, a low grade fever helps build their immune system.
I would also suggest going to the natural health food store and picking up PROBIOTICS (not sure of any brand name but if you ask about it they should know) My friend's daughter was on antibiotics for almost 2 months striaght due to a sinus infection. And after surgery she was still getting the infections. Once she came off the antibiotics, within 3 days she would get symptoms agian. My friend was exhasuetd and frustrated and went to the local organic store and Probiotics is what she got. After about a week on it her symptoms disappeared. When she went back to the ENT Dr for a follow up he was amazed at how good her sinuses looked. He was impressed that the Probiotics helped build her immunity up and in turn helped her heal so quickly. So I would say give it a try- what have you got to lose at this point!?! Good luck.

I had almost the exact problem with my 4 year old when he was a baby. He was at the dr and on antibiotics ALWAYS for ear infection. I ended up talking to a friend of a friend who swore if I took him off dairy for a little while they would clear up. She explained that dairy (along with gluten rich grains and eggs and starchy veggies) promote mucus production which causes congestion which causes ear infections. My DR said it was nonsense, but the proof was in the pudding, it completely worked. I took him off just dairy and limited the other stuff and he hasn't had one since. It was amazing. As he got older I added it back slowly and now he handles dairy fine.
That's my story ; )
Hope you figure it out, good luck!

my step brother and sister in law went throught this very same thing. everytime the baby would go back to the daycare he would get sick, he would stay home with either mom or grandma and get all better. go back and get sick that very day. they had to change things- now my sister in law stays home. i don't get into the finacials with them, but it is hard- i do know that. we have 4 and i stay home. either that or you're going to have to find a cleaner daycare.

This will really depend on your daycare provider. If they are willing to take him, I'm not sure that he shouldn't go. I have a feeling that you could spend another week home with him and have the exact same issue the following week. As far as being worried, try not to make yourself sick! This is something he will battle for awhile and work through. I don't see any reason to go back to the doctor, he will just tell you the same thing. When my son started daycare, I was at the doctor constantly because he always had a fever! My doctor would never do or say anything differently: make sure he drinks a lot and give him motrin. My son also did not seem affected by this persistant fever at all. If it spiked before I gave him his next dose, he would get cranky. Once medicated again, I couldn't keep up with him.
As my doctor was examining him, he was smiling and laughing. The doctor then told me "if he is acting like this, he is not truely sick!" He said that when he is miserable, not drinking and not eating, that is when more attention needs to be given.
I know how hard it is to see the love of your life sick so often, but it will pass. If daycare will take him and it isn't a high fever, I say go for it. If you trust the provider, you could also provide them a measured dose of tylenol to help him through the day.

B., I had a neighbor w/similar circumstances and her ped. told her to just get the kids out of daycare. Just to let you know, you can also give tylenol along with motrin. My ped. told me that and my husband is an nurse and gives it in the e.r. Good luck! C.
