One Year Old Foods

I have a baby just turned one. I am trying to move him off formula onto real foods. He likes things he cann eat by himself, ex: crackers, toast, cheese. I am worried about him getting the nutrition he needs. He hates stage three baby foods (mush with lumps of food in it, I think it's a texture thing) I need ideas of things to feed him that are easy to pick up and nutritious. ...Also, should I be concerned about giving him a bottle still? OR is it ok for a while longer?

Hi S..
My son just turned 1 a few weeks ago and he eats everything!
Your son can eat about whatever you do just as long as it is cut up into pieces and isn't too spicy. My son's favorite is scrambled eggs with sausage and cheese!
My son eats chicken, ham, sausage, bacon, steak, turkey and gerber meat sticks.
I also give him the small plastic containers of corn, green beans, carrots and peas that are available in the canned food sections. Those are quick and easy to transport. He will also eat any fresh or cooked vegetables that aren't a choking hazard (like fresh carrots).
He just loves fruit and will eat the same small fruit containers which are just the right size for their age. The come in pears, peaches, mandarin oranges and mixed fruit. He'll also eat cut up grapes, watermelon, strawberries, bananas and kiwi fruit. He gets fruit for breakfast and snack.
To get lots of calcium, I give him yo baby or other organic whole milk yogurt. He also eats velveeta cheese that has been cut up or the crumbles cheese that comes in small pieces already.
You need to get him used to different foods, textures and tastes so don't be afraid to let him try lots of different things. Our son loves to eat and is getting lots of healthy foods. I try to avoid much of the crackers, breads, etc since there isn't hardly any nutritional value.
But, experiment and let him try feeding himself as much as possible. It's the cutest thing ever to watch them eat.
As far as the bottle, we're down to morning and night only and he has sippy cups during the day. The darn cups are just messy and leak too much for me to totally give up the bottle. I should probably do that soon.
Good luck and have fun finding what he loves!

Any canned veggie - beets, corn, lima beans, sweet peas, green beans, ect.
Diced lunch meat, fruit cups, pickled veggies are great at our house - pickled corn, okra, pickles- SHe loves meat loaf and anything with ground beef or ground turkey. Diced tomotoes with cilantro (aka - pico).
She loves fried okra, fozen broccoli that has cheese mixed in.
As far as spices go - my daughter eats mexican rice with hot sauce in in at mexican food restraunts and has since she was 10 months old. She loves onion too. I let her eat all that kind of stuff just not in excess. My friends child orders food when we go out to eat and it is full of "hold the ..." I think it is because when she was little the made sure she didn't eat enything out of the ordinary. My child will eat anything...Sometimes I wonder if that is good or bad!

I, too am a mother of 1 year olds and they eat everything! Per my pediatrician, if they have teeth, they can eat anything. Just avoid too much spice and make sure that if you do meats that they are tender. Good luck! It never hurts to try!

Gerber Graduates entrees are little meals with big people food. They are big enough for fingers to grab and small enough for little mouths. My son ate those when he was one, and he liked them. I also gave him a little spoon and fork so he could get use to seeing it and begin to use it. Now he is 20 months old and he has mastered the art of using utensils.

When my son was a year, he "got bored" with baby food... perhaps your son is just bored with the baby food as well and would welcome a little entree... if he has teeth that is.

My word of advice on the bottle, is to wean him off right now. Right now, he will forget in a day or two... when he gets a little older, he will see it as a comfort thing and actually depend on it. It is easier to wean now than later. Same with pacifiers. My son was done with a pacifier when he was around 8 months or less and bottles went away around 11 months. I had no problems with it. I hear other parents have problems when they chose to wean later... Good luck with whatever you chose!

My daughter turned 1 a few weeks ago and our doctor told us to get her off the formula and rice...but to stay away from Peanut Butter right now.

But, I feel that she isnt getting enough nutrition to give up the formula and rice. But I did get rid of the afternoon bottles and only give formula in the morning and right before bed. The rice I use as a thickener for her Stage 2 meals.

My baby is the same re Stage 3 meals...doenst like the flavor. The only ones she will eat is the Green Beans with rice and the stright veg. kind.

We feed her the Gerber Grad Carrots and Green Beans, the lil Meals, lil sides, lil soups. She didnt like the meat sticks...so I cut up lunch meat into bites she can eat. Diced tomatoes, fruit, bread, avacado, crackers, puffs, and pasta is what she likes the most. I stay away from cheese and any thing with sauce like spaggetti...she wont eat it if it is too strong of a flavor and she is lacotse intollarant. She also wont eat any citrus fruits like oranges. So I understand how you feel about trying to give nutritious meals and keep him healthy.

My advice...do what you feel is best for your baby. My little one doesnt use a sippie cup but has just learned to hold her bottle this month. So we are not rushing anything.

I was told to completely take them off the bottle when they turn one. We give our 11 month old anything that she can chew. She really loves pasta. I'll prepare it and before I add butter, salt, or sauce, I'll get her a plate and she loves it. Try steaming vegetables, any fruit (my daughter loves cantalope), etc. Anything they can handle chewing I would suggest trying unless it's full of sugar and such.
