On OB Recommendation in Madison

Hello - I recently moved to the Madison area and am in need of an OB. This is my 3rd baby and I've never had an epidural (scared to death of them), so I'd like a doctor that supports natural childbirth. I'm 32 weeks pregnant so feel I should get on this, but don't know where to start. Also, any hospital recommendations? I was leaning towards Meriter because they have water births and I'm interested in that since I want a natural birth . . . do I need to go the midwife route? I'm so confused with little time.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I settled on delivering at Meriter and tried to find an OB - went through your suggestions first and found a clinic of 4 women - Associated Physicians (I think) that are very supportive of natural birth and they could see me first (since I haven't been seen since before I moved), I figured that was most important - Thanks, you mama's are wonderful.

Hi,
I had my babies at Meriter through the perinatal center. (You can call ###-###-#### and ask for the perinatal clinic.)
I had a wonderful experience with them there. For my first birth, I had back labor and we used the bathtub in the birthing room- it was very helpful. For my second baby, I arrived only 15 min. before I had him so it was a natural birth (no anesthetics) :). I felt great afterwards knowing there were no drugs in my body and, of course, a great sense of accomplishment. The staff there is very understanding with any choices you make for your birth. They are advocates of breastfeeding also and have lots of support in that area.

Lots of luck for a positive birthing experience and a healthy baby!

Melius, Schurr and Cardwell are fantastic. And they deliver at Meriter.

I think most doctors support natural childbirth in Madison. Meriter does have a nice birthing center. I liked my ob, Kim Miller. She is very understanding. I did not have an epidural for either birth, and no one ever questioned my decision not to have one. They way it works for uwhealth is that the doctor is on call is the one that delivers the baby, so my ob did not deliver my babies.

I believe there is a birthing center in Middleton that has midwives if you chose to go that route.

We used the UW midwives for our 1st & 2nd and they do births at meriter, and see women in a number of clinics around Madison both east and west side. Highly recommended! http://www.uwhealth.org/midwife/programs-and-services/10216. With my first I had intense back labor and they were there when i needed them, applying back pressure! :) also my water broke before labor started and it took 12 hours for me to go into labor, they offered to induce me and if it took a lot longer probably would've needed to because of the risk of infection but they respected my desire to avoid drugs and let me wait a lot longer than most doctors would - they probably would have put overt pressure on me to be induced but i liked that the midwives respected my desires and didnt push the issue when it wasn't necessary. And I'm so glad i let it happen naturally. Anyways, the midwives were great, probably mid range when it comes to midwife vs doctor approach, not quite so hands off as some home birth midwives that never check your progress, you know dilation and such, and just let things happen hands off, but not invasive or pushy like doctors can sometimes be - they get to know you and what you want and go with that. I've also heard good things about and toured the birth center in middleton, which is a non-hospital midwife based maternal care and childbirth center...website http://www.madisonbirthcenter.com/
