I have read that giving children Omega 3 (fish oil) is suppose to improve speech and communication. Has anyone else heard of this or tried it on their toddler? I am thinking of giving this to him. Any thoughts? My son is 20 months old and is a babbler.

What can I do next?

oh goodness. I don't know anything about fish oil, what I do know is that my brother babbled until he was 3 and then started talking in sentences. Do you talk to him? When he asks for something by pointing do you say what it is?

Boys can be slower to talk.. not to worry.

Essential source of vitamins. The effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acids as a therapy for Alzheimer's disease was ruled out in a study published Tues. Outcomes of clinical trials were released showing that <a title="Omega-3 study finds no advantage for Alzheimer’s therapy" href="http://selectbestwine.com/2011/03/11/benefit-for-alzheime... fatty acid</a> supplements didn't impede the mental deterioration of Alzheimer's. Omega-3 fish oil has been touted as a treatment for Alzheimer’s because people with a diet rich in fish demonstrate a lesser tendency to suffer from dementia .

Cod liver oil is terrific for kids (correct dosage 1/2 tsp per day) regardless. Cod liver oil, in addition to the omegas (if you get the right kind) has vit a and D which is excellent for fighting flu and cold. Viral overloads can effect speech. Speech is a development of coordination and the brain, which is fed by a number of nutritional sources in the body. Cod liver oil, if addressing a difficiency, may help, but it would depend on if t addressed something that was preventing it. At this time of the year, I would certainly go ahead and give it to enhance your sons health and if you notice an improvement, well, great!
If you get past two and see delays, there are many ways to medically treat developmental delays - ping me then as you may not need that info at all.

I thinking giving your child fish oil is the best thing a parent can do for them! There are SO many benefits to giving this to your child. It helps with brain development, which will make them smarter, and in turn, improve speaking and communication skills as well as helping with eye sight. It ensures a healthy heart, brain, joints, digestive system, and immune system. I also hear it helps with ADHD. Even my husband and I take it everyday. I think it's great and I have given it to my child (along with a children's acidophilous) everyday since he was an infant. He's 4 now. As an infant I gave him a liquid essential fatty acid, but as soon as he got teeth I switched to a chewable, I give him Nordic Naturals Children's DHA (100 chewable soft gels $21). He has no problem taking them! They come it different flavors. He calls it a 'treat'. My son likes the strawberry flavor. I buy this at the Vitamin Shoppe... they are all over the US, but I don't know if you have one by you??

Hope this might help! Good luck!

Hi Jill,

Yes, yes, yes! The old wive's tale that fish is good for the brain is actually true. Omegas are excellent to stimulate AND protect brain function and of course that will help speech. It also promotes brain and eye development in the womb. The prenatal pack, the sister form of the multivitamin I take, includes an Omega supplement because it is SOOO very important, especially combatting the lack of nutrition in our diets these days.

God bless!

Have you spoken to your child's doctor about your concerns with your son? That would be my only advice. Ask your doctor about the fish oil, and if you think there are speech concerns contact your state's version of early intervention. It is a free program and they offer free and wonderful evaluations of children and place them in appropriate programs for any suspected delays. I live in SC, so I know our information, but I find that many people on here are from Georgia, and unfortunately I don't know that info.

I am not trying to scare you, but if your child has a speech delay early intervention is your best bet to close the gap as quickly as possible. There is no harm in being proactive.

Good luck!

Children's bodies are different than adults' bodies. Speech development comes at different rates for different children -- and a 20 month old boy not speaking is not a surprise.

I would wait on ANY supplement for my child until I had spoken to his/her pediatrician! I strongly urge you to speak to your son's doctor first.

It may be fine. Or you may be "treating" something that needs no treatment or with the wrong thing.

If you are concerned about speech development -- and the doctor agrees -- I would go the therapy route before I gave my child supplements. Why don't you instead do fatty fish, winter squashes, and olive oil more in the diet to get more Omega 3s?

I've never heard of that but I wouldn't be worried about your son's talking skills till he is at least 2yrs old. My son at 18 months didn't say a lot either. He had a few consistant words like M., dada, etc but other than that, he would say a new word for a week and then you'd never hear it again!! At his 18 month check up, his ped said we would wait till he turned 2 to do anything. Let me tell you, by time he was 2yrs, he was right on target with his speech. Now at 2 1/2yrs, he is over developed for his age!! Go figure. She did say that boys do tend to develop speech slower than girls and since he had an older sibling, that could have been slowing him down as well.

Even though he can't really talk back to you, talk to him!! Tell him about what you need to buy at the store while you push the cart. Ask him what he wants for dinner, give him 2 packages of crackers to pick from for his snack, etc. People used to look at me strange when I did that with my kids, but how else are they supposed to learn if we don't encourage them right??!!

Good luck!

umm, I never heard that before and personally I would hold off on that for a while unless your pediatrician thinks there is a speech delay or issue. My daughter was pretty much a babbler too until she was 3 and then it was full on sentences out of nowhere.

All kids develop at different rates...but at 20 months old...he's far too young to be speaking clearly. Babbling is totally normal. :)

Start giving your son Chia. We all take it and love it. It is the highest source of omega 3s. I put it in muffins, cereal, yogurt, whatever. If you want more info let me know and I can email you a site where you can order it from. Otherwise you can buy it at Whole Foods

Jill,

Omega 3 is good for so many things, I would not be surprised if this were true. It is good for the brain overall including depression, good for the heart, and I keep learning more about all it can to. It is an anti-inflamatory essential fatty acid - which is especially needed if you have a diet high in Omega 6 (found in beef, corn etc.) I would recommend it hands down! (Unless you already have a diet high in Omega 3 - you can check out on the web all the foods that contain it.) I give something called Coromega to my girls. It is flavored and can be taken on a spoon or mixed in food.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I have heard this as well but 20 months is awful young to be worried about babbling. My son, who is now 7, did not even say 'M.' until he was 2. He is totally fine now. My 22 month old babbles alot too. Its very normal but omega 3 is a great thing to give them anyway. It wont hurt, thats for sure.

The source of the omega 3 is important. That's why naturopaths recommend getting cod liver oil instead of omega 3 oil. Both of my kids, age 4 and 21 months, have taken cod liver oil since they were 10 months old. They are healthy. I give them Nordic Naturals strawberry cod liver oil. I take cinnamon CLO. My 4 year old is now getting to where he prefers the cinnamon flavor.

Omega 3 oil is great and supports brain function. It's awesome stuff! My ADHD son thrives on it. It definitely won't hurt, that's for sure. Most of us don't get enough of it. That's why manufacturers are adding it to so many things, such as spaghetti noodles, etc.

Speech is part of Part C IDEA services available to all children. Go to public health and have his speech evaluated. It is free. Services are available for him for speech or whatever else he may need to get him off to a great start in school. Babies are evaluated through Babies Can't Wait at public health. Toddlers by Early Intervention at public health. This is funded by your federal tax dollars. Use your services.

While it might be true that it gives some assistance in that area, it is also true that a boy who is 20 months old often babbles. Speech is a funny thing -- the development of it varies from child to child and it is not abnormal for a child his age to have few words, especially not abnormal in a boy. Girls develop speech faster than boys, so avoid the tendency to compare him to girls his age. There are norms for speech development and your pediatrician should be able to advise you on what they are. He should have a few words down pat by now and you should see a good increase in his vocabulary over the next year.
