So my DH and I both had the cold/flu that was going around. He developed strep throat out of it. I thought I had made it out easy, the first day was miserable but the rest i could handle. But today I woke up and my face hurt. It is just one side but I feel as if it will explode. I have been using a wash cloth I have heated in the microwave to loosen the junk in my sinuses but about thirty minutes after doing this it is back to square one. I have never had an actual sinus infection before so what do i look for? The stuff coming out is like a milky yellow color (TMI). It is only one sided is that normal? I cant take too many OTC drugs because I am eight months pregnant does anyone have home remedies that may help until i can see a doc even?
My doc wasnt in today so i saw another doc. He didnt want to do Xrays on my face since i am pregnant. He went ahead and is being proactive and gave me an antibiotic and Vicodin for pain. Thank you for all the advice. I know some of you will have an opinion about the vicoding, but i have discussed it with my ob since i had to take it after my car accident a few months ago and she says as needed it is ok. Thank you all again!!!

I feel your pain sister, as I am going through this one right now as well. And yes, my OBGYN told me that all Sudafed products are fine for pregnancy and I took it when I was pregnant both with my first boy and my twins and all was well. Some doctors will tell you no on every OTC drug, but I think that is more about malpractice lawsuits than anything else. Also, if you are tired and worn out because you can't sleep due to the congestion it makes to REALLY difficult for you to care for your other 2 little ones. :)
And yes, it is normal for one side to be more affected than the other. Currently, I am dealing with my right side having issues and the left not so much. I have the most pain right between my eyes. I would like to add that I have had chronic sinus infections in the past, so I am experienced (unfortunately so) on this topic.
I would say give it a day or so and then if you start coughing up the yellow/greenish gunk than you ought to head to the doctor and see if antibiotics are needed. Given the fact you were exposed to strep throat it might be wise to go in anyway if you can.

I have had a sinus infection before and that sounds like what you might have. I would go to the doctor. I know you can take sudafed when you are pregnant and that will help with some of the congestion, which will slightly ease the pain. But it sounds pretty severe and I think you should get into the doctor a.s.a.p. Good luck.
I am SOOOOOOO Sorry! Being sick SUCKS! I am not sure this will help but I guess anything is worth a shot at this point. Ocean Nasal Spray, it is just water and salt, it breaks up the "stuff" off the membrane wall so you can blow it all out. Maybe a cool mist humidifier? OOOO and I read it in an email and tried it a few months ago when I was sick and it WORKED! Vapo rub on your feet and put your socks on! Especially good and night when you're sleeping, no coughing, and no tossing and turning so one side can drain and you can breath and so on. Good Luck!
And be sure to GO TO THE DOCTOR! My lil' brother just had strep because on kid had it and it spread like wild fire thru the school! No sense it taking any chances!

My mother in law says to get a bowl of hot steaming water (make sure kids are napping or otherwise occupied so you don't have to worry about them getting burned.) put bowl of water on table and sit in a chair and lean over bowl with a towel drape over your head and the bowl like a tent and breathe in the steam for as long as you are comfortable doing so. Also I use non-medicated saline nose drops(like the kind from Little Noses). Also keep a humidifier in your room at night while you sleep.Hope this helps.
Hi, I also feel your pain. Have you ever heard of a Neti Pot. Its been talked about on Oprah (http://www.oprah.com/health/oz/oz_20070426_350_106.jhtml), NW Afternoon and now there is a commercial on TV. It is a natural cleaning method. You wash your sinuses out with saline solution. You can purchase a neti pot at healthfood stores or online. You mix salt (sea salt is best)1 teaspoon to 2 cups warm water and rinse your nose (see above link). Done daily I have not had any problems. I would keep a dr. appt. just to make sure your not infected. Ask your Dr. about this. Hope this helps you and others. Feel better. B.
my Mom always boiled water and put vicks in it, then you put a towel over your head and just breathed the steam, another idea is a saline sloution, to rince out the nasal cavity, I think the best way to tell if it is a infection is if you bend over and the teeth on that side of your face hurt, also any color of discharge from creamy to yellow or green could be infection, I always founf that infectiion smells, or tastes funny if it drips down your throat.
Elevate your pillow so you don't get a big build up.
lastly one of my grammas remedies is to soak balck teabags in hot water and use those to draw out infection (so instead of a washcloth you use the tea bags) hope you feel better, Take good care.
