OBGYN Visit

My 14 yr old daughter started complaining about pain very low where her ovaries are. (Now, I am no Dr. but any means) But she only gets the pain when she runs, (she plays basketball, cross country and softball). But she is terrified to go to the OBGYN. She is very modest and refuses to take her clothes off. We need to find out what is causing the pain. What do I do? Does anyone have any suggestions? She started her period when she was 11 yrs old.

What can I do next?

Poor thing! I would take her to her pediatrician, first. She might be more comfortable with a familiar face. If needed, I would ask the pediatrician ( who knows your daughter best) about a referral to a OBGYN, and who she might recommend. I would then prep her for that appointment, and ease her into it. If the pain is near her ovaries, they might perform an ultrasound, or something similar.

It could just be a cramp, or that she doesn't stretch enough before she runs or plays a sport. As well as dehydration.

Take her to her primary care physician FIRST. This is a very uncomfortable thing for a teen and she may feel better having her own (trusted) doctor talk with her about the need to see an OBGYN because pediatricians aren't trained to help with those specific issues.

It may help and it may also help to have her visit the OBGYN for a "meeting" first and then schedule another appointment for an exam. If she hasn't gone through puberty yet, then this is all very foreign and scary.

She's either getting regular cramps from running (make sure she's plenty hydrated WELL before activities, during, and then after), or her body is getting ready to start the puberty thing. Is she still going to a pediatrician? Or a general practitioner? Take her there FIRST, and ask them to recommend a female OBGYN if necessary. Good luck!

Well at 14 I assume she has started her period. I am sure you have tried explaining to her the importance of it. Has she met her OBGYN to be? Sometimes a pre-mmeeting to make her feel comfortable helps. They mau be willing to do an ultrasound to check to fibroids or cysts. It all depends on the Doc. She really needs to understand the extremem importance of taking care of business ad that its not big deal! Good Luck!

I would go to your pedi.

My 16 yr old daughter loves our pedi and will talk to her about anything. That is the main reason I chose a female pedi.

It could be something related to sports as well... such as some sort of strain or pull. My daughter is a cheerleader and it is so easy to pull a muscle, etc.

My first stop would be the pedi.

Assure her she needs to get checked out. And make an appointment with a female dr, if that would make her feel more comfortable. Tell her you will stay in the room and only look at her if that will help. And then book the appointment...even if she is still against it. You don't want to wait this out...
