I just tested posistive at home. I called my OBGYN and the receptionist said that he will not see me until I'm 8-9 weeks along. Is this normal for a Dr to wait?? I have had problem with my other pregnancies. I like this Dr. but my other OBGyn from another city have always saw me with in a week or sometime next day after a home test. Should I look for another dr.???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses!! I called back and left a message for my dr./nurse and they called me back and was able to see me the next day for just lab work. Anyway...I'm glad I did that because, with my previous 3 pregnancies, I had to be on progesterone. I misscarried one because of the low progesterone. Now I'm on progesterone again!! I still will not see the Dr. until I'm 8-9 weeks along.

Thats normal, I am 8 wks pregnant right now and just went to my drs office. They wait because on the first visit they do a sonogram and they need time to be able to see the baby. I didn't even see my dr. at this visit they did the sono and got information on my medical history, and drew blood they scheduled me another appointment for two weeks later which is when the dr. will have all my test results. This is my second pregnancy and it was exactly the same the first time.

I would switch. I had no problems with my first but low progesterone with this one. They tested my blood 3 days after I found I was pregnant. They gave me progesterone shot and pills. I am now 10 weeks pregnant. My doctor has been wonderful!

Unless they have your previous medical history showing a reason to see you sooner, they will not see you until then because if you miscarry before then, there is nothing they can do. If you have a history of problems such and me (i have a history of ectopic pregnancies) then they will see you right away. In my case, they need to see me as soon as i know so they can make sure the pregnancy is in the uterus and not in the tube as i have had in the past. If you have concerns for some reason then get your records from your previous doc and insist they see you know.

K.,

My Dr. told me that waiting until 8-9 wks was the way they do it in there office, unless there is a history of problems. If you feel comfortable with your dr. then don't switch.

I think you should look for someone who will see you earlier. Even if they can't do anything but reassure you I think they should be willing to do that.

That is typical, however if the Dr. knows that you have problem pregnancies, they are usually more accomadating and will see you sooner.

I find this interesting how they wait though since it is urged to get on a great diet and prenatal pills right away.

Pretty typical. Do tell him about your other pregnancy & whatever problems you had.

My doctor had me wait until I was 6 weeks along for both of my kids. I was told they wouldn't be able to see the heartbeat on a sonogram before then.

Trust your instincts. I would try calling the doctor and explaining your situation with your past pregnancies.

Good luck!

Hi K.,

I am pregnant with my first and I think that the 8 to 10 week first appointment is pretty common from what my friends have told me... but if you are worried and have had past pregnancy problems I would call your current doctor and explain your concerns about your past history (not to the receptionist but try to talk to a nurse) and ask if there is any way you could get in a little sooner... It is nerve wracking to wait for the first appt I know but if you like your doctor you might want to just stay healthy in the meantime and wait to see him.... Hopefully he knows best and all will go well!!! I can't tell you whether or not to change doctors but follow your gut instinct and do your reserch before you change! ;) Hang in there!

The dr can't really see anything at this point since most office sonograms aren't that strong and the heart beat isn't really audible enough to definitely be heard until week 8 of the pregnancy. This is very typical.

Depending on the issues you have had with other pregnancies will determine if the doctor will see you earlier. If you have had hormonal issues with earlier pregnancies, they can do blood work to determine if you need progesterone added. Dr's do not consider one prior miscarriage an issue since this is fairly common. If you have had several miscarriages, the consider you high risk and will have you come in earlier. Age is another factor to consider. After age 35, they need to watch you more closely.

I know this is a lot to take in, but I have a lot of experience with miscarriages and fertility issues and too many doctors. If you feel you have a dire need to be seen earlier, call your OB back.

Good luck dear!
