NuvaRing

My doctor asked me if I would like to try the NuvaRing for birth control (not really good at taking birth control pills). She said this would also slow my monthly flow as they tend to be very heavy. I researched online and saw a lot of negative responses to the NuvaRing and would like input from anyone who is currently using or has previously used this method of birth control. Thank you.

I used it for about 2 1/2 years and absolutely loved it. No side effects, didn't have to remember a pill everyday, and my husband could not even tell it was there. Everyone responds to BC differently, but I say it's definitely worth a try. Once I'm done breast feeding the baby I'm pregnant with now, I will go back on it.

Good luck!

I'm also a fan of the NuvaRing. I had trouble with taking the pill at the same time every day, religiously. Probably the reason for baby #3 (who makes me endlessly happy I was on the pill!) No negative side effects that I can see. :)

hi T.! i started using the ring about 5 months ago and i think it's perfect. my flow was crazy heavy so i wanted to start BC that would lighten it up. but i hate taking a pill every day and the doses are so high that i would have some wretched side effects. the nuva ring dose is lighter but since your uterus absorbs the meds you don't need as much as when you take oral BC. it's easy to remember, you keep it in 3 weeks, take it out one week. it does take a little practice to insert, and it can come out during sex, although it never has for me, just rinse it off and pop it back in.
all in all, it has been working great for me and i recomend it to lots of my friends. feel free to ask me anymore questions, best of luck to you!

Hello. I've been using the Nuva ring for 1 1/2 years and love it. I have a very light flow, I never have any problems with irritation or infection, I don't ever feel it inside me. The best way to figure out if it will work for you is to see if your dr's office will give you a sample that way you can try it for a month and remove it easily if you don't like. IUDs are very effective for some women but are inserted into your uterine cavity so have more risks involved. There are other options such as Implanon or the patch. Just figure out what works for you!

I have the IUD and love it! It also is inserted and it also makes your periods lighter. You might ask about that instead...

Hi T.,
After the birth of my daughter in December I decided to try the NuvaRing (I'm also no good at taking the pill!) For me it was very irritating. I could feel it all the time. This may be because of my endometriosis so it may be different for you. It also didn't help slow the flow of my period.

I tried the Nuva Ring for about 3 months and did NOT like it. It came out during sex and then I'd reinsert it, only for it to wriggle it's way back down and cause discomfort.
I have the Mirena IUD now and I LOVE it! I got it after the birth of my daughter and have not had a period. It's awesome! Good luck with what you decide. =)

Hello T.,

My dr. put me on the nuvaring about two years ago and I used it for two months. It was a bit strange putting it in but other than that I didn't feel it. My husband did say he could feel it during sex. After the second month I started to feel very nauseous. On the third day of feeling horrible I pulled it out and within a few hours I was feeling much better, nausea went away. I called the dr the next morning and explained my situation and she told me that those were common side effects and to discontinue use. I ended up getting the Mirana IUD and love it.

I did try the ring a few years ago. I did get the free samples from my GYN - 3 months worth. I really liked it the first month. I couldn't feel it at all.

The second month, it did come out once with the tampon, but that wasn't a real problem for me. I had a really light period the first month . . .but the second month . . I suffered from break through bleeding frequently. When I asked my GYN, she said that was one of the issues people were facing. If you were close to a certain weight limit (I weighed 150), you had a chance of not getting enough hormone. I needed to be 145 or under in order for the ring to work for me, I was told.

Like I said, I did use it a few years ago, and maybe things have changed, but I would make sure I asked for a sample (acutally at least 2) and try it out first.

Good luck, whatever you choose,
K.

Hi T.,

I had the NuvaRing and it was okay, but I did have quite a bit of breakthru bleeding, which made me feel that it wasn't really protecting me the way that I wanted. I have my oldest daughter (12) that I adopted and I just had my youngest baby, at 35 years old in December. I now have the Mirena and I LOVE IT!!! You might want to research that as well. It's birth control that stays in for 5 years that is put in place by your doctor. I got it 6 weeks after having my baby and initially, I had very light bleeding for about 3 weeks!!! (my husband thought I was faking until he wanted to see for himself) but after that, it was wonderful. My daughter is now almost 8 months old and I'm still nursing, so I don't have a cycle at all. But I was told that Mirena significantly lightens your cycle. Check it out.

Works great for me. Did the pills for 10 years. Nasty little things, and a pain to remember every single day! Been using the ring for 1.5 yrs. I love the fact that I put in the ring, forget about it for 3 weeks. I even have a little nuva ring timer on my computer that tells me when to put in and take out. Periods are much lighter (1-3 days of light bleeding) I don't feel it at all. Doesn't come out with tampons or when I crash water skiing. Husband does say he feels it a little, but we all have to suffer a bit. I did 10 years on those nasty pills, now its my turn to have it easier. He'll have to live with a little bit of knowing its there. Try it. Thats the only way you'll find out if it works for you.

Hi, I have been using the Nuvaring for over 1 year and i like it. I had trouble taking remembering to take the pill as well and the Nuvaring is easier. The only thing I had some trouble with is yeast infections. But I eat a little yoghurt everyday for a snack (one that has active live cultures) and I haven't had that problem. I have had less side effects too: less mood swings and weight gain.

I have used the Nuvaring, IUD (merena), and pills. I think the IUD was great when we wanted something that was no maintenance and reversible. After my last baby the Dr. suggested the Nuvaring. It worked really well for me. I was instructed to take it out for the fourth week, so I had no problems with it coming out during my period. I would go back to it, but when I went to get it filled at the pharmacy, it cost $67. My insurance does not cover it at all. So we are back to the $5 pills. :) I forget a lot, but my husband reminds me (team effort and all that).

Good luck!

Hi T.,

I tried the Nuvaring recently and I had trouble with keeping up with the vaginal discharge (not breakthrough bleeding). I was not comfortable with having to wear a panty shield all the time, and the execess mositure led to yeast infections. Also,I would get periodic pelvic pains. I was not happy with those two side effects so I determined that this form of birth control wasnt right for me. I too am not good a remembering birth control pills. But as you know everyone is different, perhaps this may be a good fit for you...its worth a try! Good luck in your cursade in finding an effective form of birth control. Also, many insurance co cover very little for this form of birth control. Hopefully this info was helpful.

I tried nuvaring when I was told I had to stop taking Depo shots due to my age (40)and legnth of time I was on the shot (over 15 years - my husband and I were not planning on having any children). I could feel the ring and it was very irritating to me so I stopped use - then, long story short, I wound up pregnant at 40!! My solution now is for my husband to get a vasectomy, but until we get the 'all clear' on that I'm back to Depo - which I LOVED for 15 or 16 years - I had no period for that time which was great! It's not for everyone but you get the shot once every 3 months - not all insurance companies cover it so you need to look into that. But if you are done having kids - it's a great option.

There is always going to be negative comments on any type of birth control you research. I recently got the para guard IUD becuase like you, I can't remember to take a pill. So far its been good. There is usually heavy bleeding for a few days, and spotting for a few weeks, but after a year or so its supposed to eliminate your cycle so you don't even have to worry about it. You can also keep it for up to 10 years. Hope this helps. Try to find good things about the NuvaRing too and if you have a bad feeling about it, don't do it. There are so many options now days. Good luck!

Hi T.,
I used the NuvaRing for about 6 months last year before we had our little girl. No, it wasn't a malfunction of the nuvaring, ha ha I had taken a "break" and didn't make it more than a month when I got preggers. Anyhow, I absolutley loved it, found it very convenient my dr. said I could use it 1x a month so I would change it out on the 1st of every month in order to not have a period. I love not having a period I had been on Depo-provera for 10 yrs. prior to my dr. saying I had to stop taking the depo b/c of FDA findings it was linked to bone mass loss. I switched and used the nuva ring. I too am HORRIBLE at remembering to take BC pills.

I currently use the Mirena-IUD inserted after the birth of our daughter b/c it's good for 5 yrs. and not planning on another baby but still want the option so just in case you may be interested in that option.. as your dr. I love it and have NO issues or period either.

I hope this helps.

I tried the NuvaRing for about two months, the first month was ok. I never felt it or had any discomfort. The second month I put it in and it later came out with my tampon, which all the paper work and even my OB/GYN said I could still use tampons while wearing the NuvaRing. So, long story short...the only problem I had was getting it to stay in during my period. I didn't have any crazy side effects at all.

I have used NuvaRing just over a year. I love it. For three years I used an IUD. My period was horrible. I had cramps all week with a very heavy flow. With NuvaRing I have minimal cramping and my period is a normal flow now.

Hope this helps.
