I am very interested in becoming a nutritionist. I want to do an online program to become either a nutritionist or a registered dietitian. Does anyone know any good master level programs to do online and online schools that are accredited and relatively reasonably prices...any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a master's degree in Human Nutrition and passed the Registered Dietitian Exam last year.
A great place to start for information is the American Dietetic Association website:
http://eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xsl/career.html

If you scroll down to the bottom of that page there's a link to 'Education Flowcharts' which will give you an idea of what the process is to get educated and credentialed.

The ADA also has a listing of accredited education programs. You can take some of the classes online:
http://eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xsl/career_401_EN...

I highly recommend going for the RD credential. It does require an internship but you will be better positioned for job opportunities and to offer the best, most current, evidence-based information on food and nutrition to your clients. Registered Dietitians truly are the experts in this field of work. I completed my internship in 6 months and learned so much.

Also, you do have to be licensed by the state of Texas in order to practice here. Here's a link to Texas licensure:

Good luck to you!

Congratulations on wanting to educate yourself about nutrition. It is so important to the health of our children and society. You might check out some alternative routes like:

www.integrativenutrition.com

I went to this school and learned so much more than nutrition, but how to take care of myself and others on all levels: mind, body, spirit.

If you are interested in talking about it, let me know:

Best of luck in your search!

The best thing to do is just simply research. Do a general search on Yahoo! for 'online nutritionist courses' & see what comes up. Then you can compare each school including tuition, length of program & classes required from each school. Not all schools require the same classes for a degree. Then you should check w/the state licensing board to see if you need a license to be a nutritionist & what the requirements are for getting that license then you can go from that point, knowing what is needed, to get your degree from the school that gives you those requirements. Good luck!!

I have a 4 year degree in nutritional sciences and ended up working for the WIC program. I loved working as a state nutritionist and almost applied to the RD internship but long story short we ended up moving out of state and had a very tough time finding employment as just a nutritionist. Now I am back in school for a nursing degree.

I do not know of any online classes specifically for the type of program you are looking for. However, their are many basic classes that you can take online through Lonestar College that would count towards your total credit hours.

Most RD programs are internships and very competitive to get into. I would say your best bet would be to talk to a school that offers a RD program and ask about the requirements for the undergraduate degree and the RD program. University of Houston and Texas A&M would be great starting points.

Good Luck to you.

I have my RD from Texas A&M. I would recommend getting your RD over nutritionist, just because you would have more job options such has hospitals and such who require RDs for Joint Commission standards. Another great program in the area is through Texas Women's University down in the Med Center in Houston. But Jennifer S is right, RD requires an internship, some of them run about 9 months. Although it has been a long time since I have done mine, so things could change.
