My daughter is 8 mos old and suddenly refuses to breastfeed; started tuesday night when I got home from work. She just cries and pushes away when I try to nurse her. She has had a runny nose (clear) and seems to be teething. I know this may trigger a strike but I am worried she is not getting enough and may not go back to nursing. She will drink about 3 oz out of a bottle, but I am pumping 8 oz so I know she usually gets more. She will eat some ceral. I am taking her to the Dr tomorrow to check her ears.

Has anyone had this happen and return to sucessful breastfeeding? I do work 3 days per week and she usually only takes a bottle of pumped milk when I am not home.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone for giving me hope! After 4 days off she suddenly started nursing again. I had already taken her to the doctor who found nothing wrong with her except a runny nose and teething. At least I got to stockpile my freezer with milk from all that pumping!!

What you pump and what she takes are 2 very different things. She nurses/takes as much as she wants not the amount that you are able to pump.

The bottle is easier and if her ears, teeth whatever are bothering her she'll go for the bottle. Just keep offering her the breast first and make sure she isn't too hungry when you try, give her tylenol about 1/2 hour before you know she'll probably be hungry, clear out her nose before nursing so it's easier for her to breathe.

Yep, when they are sick or teething, or just distracted. Once it is resolved, you may try to JUST offer the breast. She won't starve herself.

Yes - it happened when my son was 6 months and had a virus that ended up getting into his lungs (it was just a normal cold virus but caused him to wheeze). He went on a strike for a few days and finally when we were admitted to the hospital and he got breathing treatments and started to feel better, he started getting hungry and nursing again. He would not take boob nor bottle at that time. We successfully nursed for a year -- so yes, we went back to it. It was difficult and stressful watching him refuse me, taking the time to pump and then him refusing the bottle too. Tough stuff when the little ones are ill! Best wishes!

Could be ear infection. My youngest son had several ear infections as a baby and the pressure from being tipped on the side made him not breastfeed. He cried whenever he laid down. When the infection , if there is one, is cleared up all will go back to normal.

VERY common around 8 or 9m, don't give up. Sometimes they just get picky about surrounding noises and lights, or have some pain from teething, which they would have w/a bottle too. Keep it up. Pump if you're worried aobut your supply, but your body should adapt to your baby.
