Nursing Mommies

I was curious, my daughter is 19 months old & I am still nursing. My question is that I still have gotten my period, is this normal? All nursing moms I know got theirs in the first year of nursing. Believe me I'm not complaining, it's been wonderful not having one for over two years but I'm just curious if this is good for your body not to have one. I plan on nursing at least until she is 2 years old.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses. I will just enjoy not having the periods while I can as long as I know there isn't anything to worry about that just makes it all the better:)

My oldest weaned at 2.5 years. My period started up again sometime around the 2 year mark, if memory serves...

It's very normal to not have periods, even at 19 months, while breastfeeding. If you allowed breastfeeding to be the only form of contraceptive, the spacing between babies is anywhere from 18 months to 3 yrs. This is from Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing literature.
It's actually very good and healthy for your body. This is part of why breastfeeding mothers run a lower risk of breast cancer, ovarian, and uterine cancers. Keep up the great job mama.

I am sure it is natural for you, one question for you, any chance of you being prego again? I ask this because your ovulation could have occured and you may have become impregnated with out you knowing. Just asking if not have you had your annual uet since baby has been born? If not I would make you appointment and ask while you are there what is up. If after you have stopped nursing and it still does not arrive then I would deffinantly call your doctor. I was not lucky enough to miss a period during any one of my 3 childrens 12 month nursing period :( lucky you.

Congratulations on nursing your daughter for so long! I nursed my oldest for about 24 months, the last several months were just bedtime only. It was about 21 months after he was born before I got my first period. There were no problems other than it pushed back our planning for baby number two. If you're feeling fine, I wouldn't be concerned.

My dd is 17 months and mine hasn't returned either. With my other two it returned around 13 months, but she does seem to nurse more. I just had my annual well woman and my doc wasn't concerned at all. I'm not complaining either!

I nursed my daughter until she was almost 2 1/2. I got my period back when she was about 18 months old.
Hope this helps!

Mine didn't come back till I quit nursing altogether. Took about another month to come back after I quit altogether. Dropping sessions did NOT make it come back until I was altogether done. Enjoy it. Nothing is wrong with nursing-related amenorrhoea.

Its fine. Many women had babies every year (back before birth control) so often went for many years without out a period. If you're really worried about it, talk to your OB/GYN.

I am currently nursing my second child. I nursed my first one for 13 months without having a period. It is quite common and considered normal not to have a period while nursing - particularly if you are breastfeeding exclusively. The only reason you would want a period is to chart your cycle if you were trying to conceive. If not, then just enjoy being period-free for a while.

Wow, count your blessings :) Even though I nursed one baby until 2 yrs. and one until 2.9 yrs. my periods started at 7 months after delivery.

But, do you have any ovulation symptoms? Definitely mention your lack of menses at your next annual OB exam. Your lactating hormones must be very strong to keep your period at bay. From what I understand, not having a period is OK for your body.

I wouldn't worry. It can be normal up to 2 years to not have one after birth. My suggestion would to be talk to your mom. Genetic history can really effect things like the fact we have an over abundance of milk and make smaller babies.
