Nursing Bra's for Larger Breasts!

I have 2 questions.

1.Where can I purchase a nursing bra for larger breasts? I was 44DD before pregnancy so places like Target, Walmart don't carry them in large enough sizes.

2. How big and when did your breasts get bigger with breastfeeding? My milk came in about 3 days ago and my breasts are definately bigger so I probaly need a size or two bigger. I just don't want to run out and buy a bra if the size could still change or get even bigger. About when do you know the size isn't really gonna change?

Right now I'm pumping as my daughter was born premature but I have a great supply of milk coming in, were working on breastfeeding too but it's a slow process.

What can I do next?

I found the best deals online - however, I can't seem to find the site - I think it was something with "bigger bras" in the name. Ha! The brands I went with though were Medela, Bravado (which was very comfortable) and the La Leche league ones. I didn't care for the other brands found at the stores - I agree they must not realize that nursing bras should come larger than a C or D cup. My experience was that my breasts did grow larger but after about 3 months - I knew my average size. I think the Bravado site helps you find a good size b/c of the stretch it has - it can cover a couple sizes. Congrats on Savannah - best of luck to you with nursing.

Not sure what hospital you're at, but a lactation consultant at the hospital measured me and was able to order any size that may have been needed.

Congrats on the new baby!!!

I have bigger breasts, too, and bought my nursing bras online at biggerbras.com. I had to order a few different ones and return some to get it right, but I have had great success with the bras they offer.

My breasts calmed down (got smaller) a bit after 2 months, but stayed pretty big (and still are, after a year of nursing). I think I went from 34DD to 36G....For the first 2 or 3 months I just wore a sleep nursing bra that I got at Motherhood Maternity. It didn't fit great, but it offered some support until I could figure out my size.

Good luck with the addition to you family!

Congrats on Savannah's arrival! I hope things continue to go well for you all as she grows. :)

There's a local place (Bravo Bras) in Blaine that has quite a selection of larger-size bras, including nursing bras (I don't remember the brands). She will do a fitting with you to be sure you get the right size, and since you're already post-partum and pumping, it should be pretty close. I don't know if that would be any more convenient for you than the places other moms have suggested, but I understand about having trouble finding decent large bras, as I was also DD before pregnancy (ended up in a G-cup(!) while nursing). Anyway, that's a local option if that's your style.

Good luck, and try to get some sleep! :\

Hi B.,

Congrats and your new little one!

I can not say enough good things about Bravado Nursing Bras. I have 3 of their "Original Nursing Bras". They are well-designed and super comfortable. The biggest plus is that each bras fits a range of sizes, so as your breasts grow and shrink, over time and even throughout the day, your bra will still be comfortable.

I was a 36DD before I was pregnant, and I know how hard it is to find good bras, much less good nursing bras. The ones at Target were so cheaply made, I took one look at them and walked away in disgust.

Brand new, Bravados are in the $40 range. I actually bought all of mine off of Craigslist and eBay. You know, some women only nurse for a short period, so it's easy to find used Bravados.

One sizing tip: If you look at their sizing chart and find you are in between two sizes, consider going with the smaller one. They are super stretchy, and you will end up swimming in your bra if you go with the larger size.

You asked about breast size. You know what--there's really no way to predict or judge what's going to happen when. Once I was pregnant, I want up to an "E" cup. I wore Bravados during the last part of my pregnancy and while I was nursing. Since the bras fit while I fluctuated, I wasn't really aware of what cup size I was.

1. I was a 36DD and went to an F when i was nursing. I couldn't find an F anywhere other than Fredricks of Hollywood - and couldn't find a nursing bra. I'm sure you could order on-line. But I dealt with a regular bra until I went down and could wear a DD or E again which could be purchased at Motherhood Maternity.
2. I bought the F the week I came home and within a few weeks was back down to DD/E.

Hope that helps.

Congrats B.!

If you're in contact with a lactation consultant at the hospital where you delivered, they can probably hook you up (pun intended!) with a Medela dealer in town. The hospital itself may even sell Medela bras or be able to special order them for you. Medela sells special sized lactation bras and they're great. They have extra support where you need it, so you don't have pressure in your shoulders or back, yet you get support. They're a little pricey (40$), but the good thing is you get measured and a consultation so that you will get just the right size you need. I can't remember, but they might be covered by insurance if you get a "prescription" from the nurse/hospital in the same way that some insurance will cover the entire cost of a hospital grade breast pump. That's something to check on.

If you do get a bra through the hospital/a consultant, they do order the cup slightly large because constrictive bras can hamper milk production, so you won't have to worry so much about your breasts getting too big as your baby's milk demand goes up. As for how big they get, that differs for everyone. Some people don't change much at all, and others can get one or two sizes larger.

If your hospital can not help you, or don't sell the bras, check out the following websites to find a medela dealer/consultant near you;

www.medela.com (Click on the icon for nursing moms and follow the links to products, then intimate apparel. At the bottom of the catalogue pages are links to find a dealer or consultant near you)

www.lalecheleague.org or www.llli.org (click on shop or click on resources to find a consultant near you) Another point; most lli consultant's services are free. Especially if you get them through a neighborhood support group!

Try Bravo Bras in Blaine. Call for an appointment, but I'm sure she carries your size. They have been around a long time and will custom fit you with a comfortable bra. I got two after about three weeks and they were about $40.00 each.

The best place that I have found to buy nursing bras is Nordstrom. They are a little pricey (anywhere from $60-$80), but all you need is one or two to last you, and the great saleswomen help you to find the exact size you need. They also carry some bigger and smaller sizes that are tough to find in discount or department stores. If they don't have what you need in stock, they will special order it for you. Or, maybe they can suggest someone that might carry those larger sizes. The best thing I found to relieve the soreness and aches of the breasts during nursing was a nice, supportive nursing bra with a good fit. I know it's more expensive than shopping at Wal-Mart or Target (which is usually my budget), but for this one item, it's well worth the splurge.

My milk came in around 3 or 4 days after giving birth and this was by far the biggest my breasts ever got. After a couple of days, they started to reduce in size and after a couple of weeks they were about the size they were for the remainder of the time that I was nursing. If anything, I would suggest shopping a couple/few weeks after giving birth.

Good luck! Hope this helps!
