What is the view of nursing while pregnant, I've read an article that says a baby can nurse until 4-5 months of being pregnat with a second child, is this safe. Should one stop nursing thier child if they find out they are pregnant?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all you're helpful advice, it is good to know that we can do both, even though my Dr frowns on it, I am trying to wean him because I am getting sick and dizzy he is not happy and will nurse once a day and then take the bottle before going to bed. So it is definately comforting to know that others nurse while pregnant and I don't have to feel strange about offering him breastmilk if he still wants it. I appreciate all your advice.

Hi M.,

When I got pregnant with my last one I continued to nurse. I had to stop when I was about 2 1/2 months and that was only because the vitamins weren't agreeing with my son. Otherwise I would of continued. I actually felt that I had more energy when pregnant and nursing then I did when I had to stop nursing. I'm sure like everything else everyone is different but the important thing is to do what you feel is best and what works for you.

Good luck,
D.

i just went though this --i got pregnant when my baby was 7 months old in aug 2007. i was told to stop nursing as soon as possable it was hard but i did it in 2 weeks. she was ok about it and i had a lot of guilt. but the doctors recommoned that i stop. i have 4 kids all together and when you preg. your tired anyway never mind tired and nuring with 4 kids. it also made me very crampy when i nursed preg. that always made me nervous. they say if you nurse 6 months thats great.

You can nurse through an entire pregnancy, and then nurse both children, if you want to. Some people find this is what they want to do, and some find it too much, but your body can handle it. There will be enough milk for both children. Sometimes the older one will stop nursing when the milk changes back to colostrum, but some will continue right through. If you have more questions, call your local La Leche League. They know everything about nursing, and will support you in any decision you make.

I nursed my son for the first few months (my babies are 16 mnths apart). After a few months he just los interest. I think my milk dried up because I had a lot of morning sickness. I was about 4 months along when Danny lost interest.
Good luck!

Hi M.,
I am currently nursing my 2 and a half year old and my 9 month old. When we decided to try for the second baby, I was still nursing my oldest. There are no safety concerns about nursing while pregnant, unless you are in the last few weeks and are getting dangerously strong contractions while breastfeeding (but according to my midwife, even smaller braxton-hicks type contractions while breastfeeding are fine). Other concerns I've heard are that if you haven't started menstruating again, due to breastfeeding, it would be much harder to get pregnant. Also, the taste of the milk changes throughout the pregnancy as it's gearing up for feeding a newborn. So my daughter went through a few episodes when I was 5-6 months pregnant where she would start to suck and then make a face like it tasted bad, and then would stop at that specific time. But she kept coming back for more and she either adjusted to the taste or it kept tasting different. But to answer your question, there are absolutely no safety concerns about breastfeeding while pregnant, and many women nurse both their older child and the newborn (tandem nursing). I've attended a breastfeeding womens support group weekly for the last 2 years and this info is backed by the international board certified lactation consultant that runs the group. If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope that helps!

As far as I know, you can nurse the whole time you are pregnant and some people tandem nurse after they have the new baby. (Though your milk may change and the older child may become less interested). I am currently nursing my 10 month old and I am 6 weeks pregnant.
