Not Waving/clapping at 11 Months?

Son is 11 months in about a week. He doesn't clap or wave yet though he has tried to imitate a wave two or three times I believe. No clapping, he just wants to hold my hands when I clap.

Anyone with experience? An app on my phone about milestones says it's a 9-13 milestone, is that correct?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Started clapping the same day he turned 11 months :) Claps all the time now and on command too. He waves at times too.

Started waving everyday around 12,5 months, waves hi, bye and when asked etc.. now soon 14 months.

My son didnt start clapping until well after 12 months. I dont remember exactly when, but I think it was near 18 months.

My son was slow on both of those too. He's 16 months and although he CAN do both of them, he rarely does. He follows his own schedule and never does anything on command! ;) I would just keep an eye out and he'll probably start doing it soon, especially if he's starting to imitate. It is frustrating and of course in the back of your mind you always worry, but he's fine. I hate to fall into stereotyping, but I really do think boys are slower on some of the milestones and at least my son just doesn't really care. He's much more into running in circles and screaming with joy! haha!

I think that is about right.

Is he on target for everything else? Do you see the other find motor and gross motor movements coming along, like the pincher grasp? What I would mean is that I would look at waving and clapping from two directions, can he do them physically, and/or does he need more practice or motor control? And, does he not do them because of the social implications of both, imitation, social reciprocity, etc. Does he do other things that are social and does he imitate you in other ways?

I think you have some time here, but keep an eye out. Never panic, but always stay on top of these, and never, never wait on development!

As an Early Intervention speech pathologist I can assure that you are correct. Waving Hi and Bye TYPICALLY happen between 9-12 months. I say "typically" because ALL children are different and you cannot pinpoint an exact month that this will happen. It doesn't mean he is delayed if it happens at 13 or 14 or 15 months. That is why there is always a range with these skills.
I would only be concerned if he was 18 months and still didn't do these things or if there were other areas of development such as not being able to sit unsupported or use his hands to reach for and hold toys.

Don't pay attention to milestones! The books will make you crazy! ;-) My daughter didn't clap until maybe 15 months? Maybe later? You can tell simply if they're progressing normally vs what the books say. Step away from the internet! ;-)
