So What Happened?

Thank you all for all your responses today we woke up with a completely different outlook, i did lay him down to take his bottle to see if he would hold it, and indeed he did. We worked on a sippy today and surprisingly he did quite well. I think we are off to a good start and yes we are trying to put the bottles away. But is it okay to just take the bottle away????

My son is the same way. He won't hold a bottle or sippy cup himself either and he is 13 months old. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I am still breastfeeding him also.
Anyway, I would try what other people are saying. Mix formula or breastmilk with the whole milk. Sometimes that works, other times not. With my kids, that didn't work so I just flavor the milk with a breakfast mix. My kids love strawberry but you could also try chocolate or vanilla.
Also, even though it is more expensive, they also do have a formula for toddlers. I think they even have one that is vanilla flavor. They can drink that until they are 2. I think it is made my Enfamil. You could even try that.

My son took about 3 months to learn to like milk. No worries - it is not unusual for kids to need to learn to like it. Keep offering it, and drink milk in front of your son (he may wish to mimic you or drink what you drink). Will your son not hold a bottle when he is lying down? My son still doesn't really understand how to tilt up a bottle or cup to get the liquid out, but when he was lying down, he could handle that. Good luck.

We're the only species that weans from our own milk to another animals. It's actually pretty weird. Your son doesn't need milk at all if he's eating other whome-milk dairy products like cheese and yogurt.
But yes, by 12 months a child should only be using a sippy or a real cup - no bottles. It's best to start sippies between 6 and 9 months.

Our pediatrician always told us to treat the bottle like the breast. We stopped the bottle at 1 year. My kids never held their own bottle or walked around with it or went to bed with it. I would definetely do a mix of formula and milk at first to make the transition less noticable. But I do believe if you wean at 1, it is easier. Good luck.

My daughter turned 1 last month and didn't like the switch from formula to milk. I started mixing formula and milk and slowly increased the amount of milk and decreased the formula. She now drinks whole milk from a bottle. She doesn't hold her bottle either, she can, but she would rather twirl her hair and let me hold it. I only give her a bottle at night and during the day she drinks from a sippy. She won't drink milk from a sippy, only water, so she doesn't drink much milk. I make sure to give her yogurt and cheese so she gets dairy. I've also given her drinkable yogurt in a sippy cup, which has worked well. I'm slowly adding milk until hopefully she will drink milk from a cup soon. So, I would try the milk in a sippy, and if that doesn't work try the milk formula mix or breastmilk whole milk mix if you were nursing. Don't worry, he'll get the calcium somewhere. Good luck!

my Daughter never liked milkk till bout 3 yrs old-my ped was never concerned bc they were always good eater-I have a 3 yr old son who still will not drink milk-also ped is not excited over it bc they eat well and take vitamins. My daughter loves milk now-wierd how kids pick when they like or dislike things-I would not worry at this point. Not sure about the bottle I switched both my kids at 5 months to a sippy(NUBE) the soft ones and they both had no problems and both held their own bottles by 4-5 months-although all kids are different. I would just sit it there and let him get it when they want. He prob will not hold it since u prob alwyas did-see I made my kids hold it once they were able I just offered support. Our ped as I know many do rec off the bottle by one-once again all people are different, but I would push the sippy or just go for a regular cup. L.:)

you could try letting him drink from a regular cup. children do not necessarily need to use sippy cups.

I had a similar issue. She wasnt drinking anything. I wanted to keep her hydrated so I put ICE water in her sippy cup and left is out for her to drink from when she wanted. It took me FOREVER TO find a cup she liked. Mine ended up lovin the sippy cups with the Straw. you can try it before you buy one. get a plastic cup with ice water, put a straw in it and hold it for your sone. see if he trys to drink from your plastic cup. My daughter liked the color of the ice(frosted) and the way it sounded in the cup...she thought the straw was cool. She preferred water to the milk but it was a faze...she is fine with the milk now..Took about a month though...my doc told me,
'if she is thirsty enough, she will drink just have it available for her"...hense why I Put the water out all the time.
As far as not holding his own bottle...can he hold other things?? Im wondering if he is training you to hold his bottle for him...if he can hold other things, he can do his bottle/sippy
Good luck

It can take awhile. My son would only take it with at least half formula added the first couple weeks, then we gradually decreased formula, and added more milk. Eventually it was all milk. Its a different taste for them. Maybe even try the milk not being so cold. My son liked it almost room temp at first. Give it time!

How did you accomplish the switch? If you just went from all breastmilk or all formula to all milk, then he will not like it. You must add 1 part milk to 3 parts formula/breastmilk for a day or two. Then 50/50 split a couple of days. Then 75/25 milk to formula/breastmilk. Then you can probably just go with the milk alone. If he balks at any stage, just go back to a little less milk and a little more formula for a serving or two... and slowly keep moving away from the formula and towards more milk.

If you do it slowly, he won't even notice.
