Anyone familiar with the not so big house series of books and/or similar books concerning smart home design for maximizing space?

I'm also interested in green houses if anyone knows of any good resources.

What can I do next?

We actually built a guesthouse based on some of the principals in those books. The result was a gorgeous, custom cottage (900 sq. ft.) that maximizes space and has the feeling of a much larger home.

Custom cabinetry is not cheap. The built ins we did are beautiful and really give the house a high end look but I shudder to think of what they'd cost in a larger family sized home. Are you building for your family or truly a "not so big" house?

We wanted a small guesthouse with a minimal footprint as to not disturb the surrounding woods or take away from the views in our family home nearby. If you're building more than a two bedroom you might not find some of the ideas helpful. Also be careful of catering to your own needs too much. Energy efficient and green is always good but custom storage and built ins do not leave a lot of room for another home buyer to make their mark on the house. Good luck!

I love the first Not So Big House, book. I actually bought the book. People who know me, understand that's high praise! It's smart design. Beautiful and functional, sustainable for a family and as you grow older. Every space used and no wasted, energy sucking spaces. It takes the site into account beautifully. I wasn't as impressed with the second book, not as much new info, just a rehash, found it at the library. I'd start there.

I am all for smart design, maximizing space, and built in efficiencies, when put to appropriate use. Extra storage though often begets extra stuff stored, just a thought.

I LOVE those books! Although my house is quite large, I used many of the design ideas. I now have quite a few built-in cabinetry in my house. They are not only functional but beautiful too! Check out books on built ins or go to Houzz.com for lots of ideas.
