My 17 month-old started poking her nose all of a sudden. She gets really upset if I try to make her stop. What can I do to stop her from doing it?

What can I do next?

Poking her nose??? What do you mean? Not PICKING it? Why does she need to stop? Is it harmful? I think if you ignore it she'll get bored and stop. It doesn't sound like it's dangerous. Sounds like she just found something new to do. Try not to let it bother you--or leave the room when she starts.

is it possible that she has found her nose and poking it to say nose instead of really saying nose. she may move to eyes or ears soon and leave her nose alone. Just a thought:)

I think that if you ignore her negative behavior and replace it with a positive one or change the subject with something she really likes????? The fact that she is getting a reaction from you,,,,may be why she continues to do it.
hope that helps...distract her...

I don't see any reason to be alarmed with a 17 month old.

I would, however, be aware of sensory issues with kids. Two of my kids have sensory issues that are somewhat more extreme than normal. One of my kids craves sensory input because his system is not receiving the input he gets from the environment properly. He ties his shoes really, really tight for the input and sometimes pushes his fist into his jaw really hard. (He has other disabilities, too).

My other son is ADD and has a problem with feeling overloaded at times, for example, a radio may seem louder than it really is. We had to try every kind of underwear for him until we found the boxer briefs that didn't just drive him crazy. He wouldn't wear denim jeans until just recently because he didn't like the texture. He won't eat certain food because of the texture, such as mashed pototoes. (He is 11 yrs. now.) It could be anything.

Just something to think about. I would worry about your child though.

I agree - kids try out new sensations/feelings/activities. My daughter picked her nose foe awhile. I just bit my tongue and let her do her thing. She eventually stopped by herself. One thing I can say is that sometimes these things are caused by anxiety. This happened for my daughter during a move, and she was understandably anxious, but had no way to talk about it. So, she had her finger up her nose almost constantly for two months.

Is there anything going on in your world that would cause her some anxiety? An older kid going to school, or coming home for summer vacation? Any change in the normal schedule causes kids some temporary anxiety. Find and focus on the underlying issue - the behavior will take care of itself as long as you don't try and make her stop. Good luck, and take heart!

There are reasons people pick their noses. ONe is allergies and another is intestinal worms. THere may be other reasons as well. Everything is something...good for you for noticing, now play detective to uncover what is the cause.
