My daughter will be six months old next week she will make eye contact and keep it by seems to look away after a short period of time. Is this normal? The father you are away the longer she will keep the eye contact.

She does look away to look at something else .. if she is tired she likes me to sing to her and will look away from eyes to stare at my mouth. I am just so worried about autism.

What can I do next?

Does she just look away? Because there isnt anything out of the ordinary there. She is young and the older she gets, the easier it will get to keep her attention! My daughter is 14 months, but at 6 months it wasnt as easy to have her look at me for long because her attention span was Not very long! lol. It will change. Keep saying her name so she learns to answer to it! Good luck!

Autism doesn't actually show up until later, usually around two years. A child's early development seems normal, and then they begin to regress verbally and socially. I don't believe any doctor would try to determine autism at 6 months.

A baby that age does have a short attention span, and is also highly sensitive to mommy's emotional state. If an adult is staring anxiously at her for a couple of minutes at a time, she'll feel anxious or annoyed and want to focus on something more soothing.

I hope you'll find a way to give your worries a rest – they'll do neither of you any good. And you'll do a great deal of suffering over an eventuality that may never arrive. Be here now – with your amazing new person!

I agree with Christine... I would think that even babies don't stare at people most of the time :) She is most likely fine. If something catches her attention, she'll look if not, she probably won't. I believe my daughter looked at my mouth when I talked, I mean I do it sometimes... I doubt that's any sign of autism.

I don't think anything you said sounds atypical. It's kind of normal for a kid to look at the mouth when people are talking or singing. After all that is the place that has action (your eyes are just sitting there, your mouth is moving!)

I know my daughter used to watch my mouth and when she got a bit older would try to move her mouth the same way. It's a fun age to start making funny faces and see what they do with it!
