Non-dairy Side Dishes?

Hi, moms. My in-laws were supposed to host Thanksgiving, but FIL just broke his hip (and will be home Thursday), so I'm doing all of the sides and appetizers and bringing them to his house. Only problem is that I cannot use any dairy in any of the dishes which leaves me stressed because I'm not a great cook as it is, but with restrictions like this, I have no clue what to bring. Help!

What can I do next?

Candied yams, mashed potatoes with chicken broth instead of milk/cream, Brussels sprouts, any green salad no cheese, stuffing is usually dairy free. chips and salsa and guacamole, hummus with pita chips, stuffed olives, mixed nuts are always good. For those who can have dairy make a nice cheese and fruit platter.

This might be a great way to make your dinner more healthy! I always use XV Olive oil instead of butter for my veggies. You can make stuffing, green beans with just olive oil and salt and pepper, and for sweet potatoes. For the sweet potatoes, just peel, wash and dice them (in about 1/2" - 3/4" cubes), drizzle with EVOlive Oil, sprinkle salt and pepper. Mix with your hands on a baking sheet and roast at 400F for about 40-45 minutes. They're very tasty! Good luck!

One year I made steamed carrots, put them in a serving dish, squeezed honey on top with salt and pepper and everyone raved about it! They wanted the recipe and when I told them they all laughed!

Also, do a jello salad. Make a jello packet or two as directed, set in the fridge for a few minutes, when it starts to thicken, stir in a drained can of fruit.

You can also google diary free recipes and tons will come up. Good luck!!

I'm assuming that this is a kosher issue? Okay, best (and easiest) kosher appetizer - take a whole Hebrew National Kosher Salami. Slather in Ah-So sauce (that pink sauce you can use to make spareribs), and cross-hatch with a sharp knife. Bake at whatever temp the oven is at (350-450) for .5-1 hour, until browned. Slice and serve with mustard on small slices of rye bread. It's seriously amazing. Also, you can do - cut up veggies, pita and olives with hummus.

For sides do roasted sweet potatoes (peel, dice, toss with olive oil and bake at 450 for about an hour, toss with whatever seasoning you like). Steam green beans and top with slivered almonds. Buy rolls from the bakery. I think that Pepperidge Farm stuffing doesn't have any dairy in it, and everyone loves it. Make it in a tray and stick it in the oven.

Have a good thanksgiving!

There's some kind of spicy green bean Chinese dish that probably is non dairy. Just make whatever veggies you were going to make, plain, and the non-allergic folks can add butter or whatever to theirs, while FIL eats them plain or wiht olive oil.

Tossed salad is easy and dairy free (no cheese, obviously). Don't put any dressing on it, let each person choose.

Appetizers--pickles, olives, raw veggies. Use a hummus dip if you want a dip (chickpeas and olive oil, flavored with garlic). Or toasted pita bread wedges with olive oil for dipping. Crackers and hummus. Pretzels. Fruits. Apples with caramel sauce (check labels for dairy, you might have to make your own).

Desserts--apple pie can be dairy free, probably pumpkin too if you use soy or almond milk instead of regular.

You are a nice DIL to do this :-) have fun, it will be OK!

you can still make side dishes that require dairy type products..they make alternative dairy products that can be substituted.

Instead of butter, use Earth Balance spread (make sure it says "vegan" or "dairy-free" on it). Instead of milk, you can try cooking with almond, hemp, or soy milk (unflavored). I haven't had any problem using these items for substitutions.

You can do this, take one side dish at a time. For the green bean casserole you might have to make one with just plain green beans and one with milk or is it an ANA allergy to milk? NO milk at all there or just in certain dishes ? YOu can do Baked potatoes instead of mashed or just use cocpnut or potato milk or almond milk for the mashed potatoes and olive oil for instead of butter, you can also try flewshmans light it is some kind of soy and dairy free. My SIL uses it for her kids with milk allergies but mine have soy to so we uses Mother's margerine but I do not think they make it anymore. I bought $300 worth of butter and froze it just in case this happened and I am down to my last few tubs of butter so I will try the fleshmans and see if they react to it. You can also use Spectrum shortening for an alternative to butter.
What other sides are you doing? Corn, Green beans, Cranberries, mashed potatoes? Sweet pototoes? same thing use oil and brown sugar and marshmellows. they also make oat milk but my kids are allergic to oats so never tried it. Rice milk is good too, rice, coconut, oat and potato milk and almond are all dairy , caisen, milk protein free. Hope that helps, it will turn out nice. We try to remember the focus should not be on food but the people and family and friends and being thankful....go for it!

How baout Just plain old baked sweet potato for him...or whom ever is allergic to the dairy products...and then make the sweet potato casserole or whatever else you want to make for everyone else?
Make plain green beans for the one who can't eat the dairy and make the green bean casserole for everyone else? Why should everyone miss out on the traditional fare just because one person is allergic? My MIL is allergic to celery...so when we start making the dressing, we simply take hers OUT of mix before we add the celery...hers bakes separately from the rest.
For appetizers...a beautiful tray of fruit and a great tray of veggies is a wonderful opportunity for healthy nibbling.
