My son just turned 1 yr. old April 28th. He LOVES his bottle. I have 3 different kinds of sippy cups I'm trying to get him to transition to- and he wants no part of any of them.Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I can't tell you how many different sippies I tried before I found one my kids liked. (I have 2 boys, 5 and 2.) They both liked different ones at different ages. The easiest way to get rid of the bottle is to just stop using it. Both of my kids were off the bottle within 2 weeks of their 1st birthdays. Good luck!

I used the Avent bottles, and they make a sippy cup top for them, with a soft spout. My DD converted over with no fuss whatsoever and then we moved into regular sippys (hard spout) when she was a bit older. Check and see if your bottle manufacturer makes something similar, or if you're using Avent you can pick some of them up.

I wouldn't switch over to straw cups though, they are not watertight like the sippy's are (so you'll have splashing everywhere unless you limit cups to the table), and your little one will drink much faster through them (filling up with drink at dinnertime [instead of food] isn't good, and if they drink juice or something with it, they are done chugging it before their brain gets the signal from their bellies that they aren't thirsty anymore.)

If he really won't touch a sippy, then I'd recommend waiting a couple more months. Maybe emphasize how big kids/grownups use a cup and not a bottle over that time - stuff like that still always works on my DD. = )

Good luck!

My daughter (15 months) did not take well to sippies either. Soft spouts are key.

For me, the Born Free TRAINING cup (not drinking, it has a hard spout) helped her make the transition. It was a soft spout and easier to suck on.

Now, she will use any of them, but teaching her to suck on them was the trick.

Try a regular kid's cup, no lid, occassionally. It's good to encourage them to drink that way and gets them used to a REAL cup. Even very very young infants can drink this way with supervision and assistance. The problem with a sippy is that they want it to work like a bottle but it doesn't. Once he gets used to the drinking sensation, treat the sippy lid as an extra add-on "so it sdoesn't spill." This way it doesn't replace the bottle/nipple. Then phase out the bottle

PS - My daughter was much older than one begore she could suck out of a straw. So, I think a straw cup might be more challenging for your child.

Oh I feel your pain. My son is now 14 months and he was a bottle boy! I too asked other Moms what in the world to do b/c he wanted no part of taking milk from a sippy. Water he was fine - milk he actually would spit out.

Everyone said be strong and take the bottles away offering only a sippy - so I started by taking them all except one at night. Needless to say my cabinets look like the sippy cup aisle at Target - we tried a million. It took him 4 days before he actually drank milk out of it - and by day 5 he was fine, we even dropped the night bottle. Just be sure that he is getting dairy through foods as well (yogurt was a big one I pushed) - as they tend to drink less milk.

His favorite for milk is honestly the disposable cups with the snap on lids. Sure would have been nice to know that before I spent $50 on sippys...hahaha! We also like the Nubi soft top ones.

Hang in there - they adjust, it is us that have a hard time adjusting. Once they figure out that this is how they are going to be getting their milk - they do it.

Hello R.

Both my girls did great transitioning with Nuby soft lid cups (Walmart for about 1-2 dollars) they are alot like a bottle. The only problem we had with them is that after a while, if you use the same two (I didn't know to get several with my first.. lol) they will wear down in the dish washer and then they can leak. Other than that.. they were a great way to start the sippy cup experience! Good luck!

What about trying one with a straw? My 18m LOVES drinking from a straw. There are some that have little stoppers on the end so that the straw cannot be pulled out. A favorite game of the 18m old.

My daughter was the same way. Instead of fighting it, I just stopped worrying and decided to try again when she was a bit older. I transitioned her at 18 months and there was no battle. She took to them right away. Sometimes us moms need to relax and do things on our kids time, not when "they" tell us things need to happen. Good luck!

My daughter wouldn't drink out of a hard spout sippy until she was 1 1/2. We got the Nuby cups with the soft spout I guess it seems more like a bottle to them and she took to them right away.

Good luck!

I know your pain! My son (now 18 months) had major seperation anxiety when it came to losing his bottle! I just had to be stern with myself in not letting him have one. He would cry and throw a fit when I would hand him a cup, so I tried tons. Then we finally tried the Nuby, with the soft, rubber spout. They are cheap, I think like $1 each! He took to those great, but we're still trying to incorporate other cups into the mix, he just doesn't like the other ones. So, Nuby will be good for starting him with his first cups, but I'm not sure that they'll be good for long term use. My son got just as attatched to those as he was with his bottle. Hope this helps, Good luck!
