I found a decent cake recipe for my son's first bday but am having a hard time finding a frosting that doesn't have any milk or egg. Anyone got any ideas?

Also there was a woman that did a cake with pretzels and other items and shaped it into a car when here son was younger. If she could also respond again with that recipe that would be great!
Thanks everyone!

So What Happened?

I ended up using the "wacky cake" recipe and the frosting that had conf sugar, shortening, butter (I used non dairy smart balance), clear vanilla and water with food coloring. IT WAS A HIT!!! The cake was sooooo moist and good. The best cake I have ever made from scratch. The frosting was good too! Thank you soooo much ladies for all your suggestions. Your responses were so kind and informative. I truly appreciate it! You helped make my son's one year bday party a hit!

My son has dairy and egg allergies (as well as nut) so I'm always on the lookout for products without. If you can believe it one of the store made frostings was clear of everything - I got it for his 1st birthday. i just can't remember if it was Duncan hines, betty crocker or what - but it was in the grocery store and was a regular brand. Just read the ingredients. Good luck!

My sister always makes her frosting from shortening and confectioners sugar using water to thin when necessary. The longer you beat it the fluffier it gets.

You could also use fresh fruit/fruit sauces to decorate the cake.

Margarine, powdered sugar, vanilla, rice milk. Add cocoa, coffee, or any other flavoring you care for.

I assume that soy milk would also work, but I'm allergic to soy in addition to being lactose intollerant, so I can only tell you that rice milk works. Personally, I think that Rice Dream makes the best quality rice milk of the brands that I've tasted.

Hope that helps.

I always use confectioners sugar and water. It's harder to use but you can make it a little thicker and pour it on to get the cake covered. If you want a fancy, thick frosting I haven't found any.

Cherry Brook Kitchens frosting mix is good and easy. I have made several character cakes for my kids' birthdays using Wilton shaped pans and their frosting recipe (probably listed on their website - or with a Wilton cake pan). It doesn't have eggs and I just substitute the butter with dairy-free margarine (Earth Balance makes really nice margarines and shortenings that are dairy-free and come in 1/2 cup sticks that you can buy at Mrs. Greens or Whole Foods) and substitute the milk with rice milk. You cannot taste the difference at all.

I would suggest going to Pier One and buying a cake mix from Cherrybrook Farms. They make cake, cookie and brownies for people with food allergies

Hello there!

I am not sure what cake recipe you had, but in case you haven't heard of this one, I just wanted to share it with you. I have an uncle who is lactose intolerent and I got this recipe from my aunt. This cake is one of the most delicious cakes I have ever tasted, it is so moist and springy! It's more moist than most cakes, unless you're an expert of course!!! If you double the recipe, you could easily pour it into any shaped pan I assume, even a race-car. I would grease the pan though. I would test it out before making the real one if you can.

It's called wacky cake;

1-1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp Vinegar
1/3 cup salad oil
1 cup cold water
1 tsp vanilla

Bake at 350 degrees in greased cupcake tins or 9-inch square pan for approxamately 30 minutes or until tester comes out clean.

If you choose to double the recipe bake 1 hour in a greased 8x11 pan or until tester comes out clean.

As far as a frosting recipe, I haven't tried this one, but it looks delicious, it is a chocolate frosting for the chocolate cake;

Ingredients:
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
¼ cup cocoa powder
4 ounces (half of a tub) cold dairy-free cream cheese, such as Tofutti
6 T. cold dairy-free soy margarine, such as Willow Run
1 cup dairy free chocolate chips
½ cups unsweetened plain soy yogurt
Preparation:
1. Bring several cups of water to boil in a small stockpot.

2. In a large bowl, sift together the sugar and cocoa powder. Using an electric hand mixer at a low speed setting, combine the sugar mixture with the dairy-free cream cheese and soy margarine. Turn the mixer up to high and beat until creamy and well combined. Set aside.

3. In a heatproof bowl set over the boiling water, stir together the chocolate chips and the soy yogurt. Stirring occasionally, heat the mixture until the chocolate chips are completely melted, about 3 minutes.

4. Working quickly, add the melted chocolate to sugar and margarine mixture, beating using the hand mixer on a high speed setting until mixture comes together and holds stiff peaks. Use immediately.

Good Luck! Even if you don't use this for your son's b-day you really should try the cake recipe at least! Good Luck to you and Happy B-day to the little one!

You can make your own. Buy a box of confectioner sugar and the recipe is on the back of the box. Instead of using milk and butter I used water and margarine. The frosting will be white so if you want a specific color you can buy food coloring.
Hope this is helpful

I learned to substitute coconut milk for milk in many recipes when my twins could not eat milk and eggs. If your child is ok with butter (which most are if milk sensitive) you could make a buttercream frosting. You can also get a powdered egg substitute in the health food store that works well in baking. There is always confectioners sugar mixed with water and a little lemon juice, simple and nice. Good luck.

I don't have a specific recipe in mind, but anything that is listed as vegan should avoid milk and egg. I just searched vegan frosting recipes on google and found a bunch of stuff. Good luck!

there's a brand in Stop and Shop's organic section (Cherry Brook or something like that) that has an egg free, wheat free, dairy free vanilla or chocolate frosting mix. I've made their sugar cookies and they were pretty good.
Best of luck!

there are many good VEGAN recipe websites...just do a search and you will find them. I am not at home this week so do not have my recipes available. I have 2 Vegan children and I am wheat intolerant so most of my cooking is milk and egg and wheat free.

My mother in law makes one with sugar & crisco. It's sweet, but so delicious! And it's easy to color it for whatever you need. I can get the recipe if you're interested.
