Hi all:

My poor little 23-month-old hasn't pooped in three days. She's trying but no go. What have you done or used for toddler constipation?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yay. Success with Miralax. My pediatrician recommended it as well. We try to give DD a whole-grain based diet

Pedialax works wonders. Its a safe suppository. My son was 2 when he went 3 days without a BM. 5 mins after the pedialax he lost like 5 pounds in poop! He said he was feeling much better after that.

MY 7 year old has struggled with minor digestive issues. Our pediatrician told us to give her a half dose of Mirelax in her fluids once a day. It is more of a stool softener than a laxative. Drinking juice just did not work for her. I would call the pediatrician and ask what dosage she needs.

A glycerin suppository works like magic! About 1/2 hour after insertion she'll get the plug moved and she'll be good to go. My DD had this problem at about the same age and getting the suppository inserted was not easy - she cried, sobbed, tried to wiggle away, she hated it. Only half made it in - but apparently that's all that was needed. Magic. Never had the problem again - not sure why but my theory is at this age they are growing cognizent of making a BM (they'll move to a corner of the room to be by themselves) and if they can't get themselves off to a private area or they are too busy doing something they hold it in and it becomes difficult. They don't realize that a tiny bit of pain to push will solve hte problem - but they will learn.

Have fun maman!

HI--
First, please DO NOT use mineral oil--it's toxic. That pediatrician should be shot. Next, the easiest thing to do is use powdered magnesium mixed into water. Here's a link to the brand we use. If you use too much it could cause diarrhea, but better out than in!

Also, high doses of vitamin C (you can get the chewable for kids) will also loosen up the bowels. Magnesium is sure to work, though.

My son had terrible problems with this. The Dr. had to do soap suds enemas and put him on way too much Mira-lax. Then he started to have diareah all the time. I decided to take matters into my own hands. He has done better since then. This is what we do now. Fiber gummies daily, no white bread, lots of liquids, as much fruit and veges(fresh) as I can get him to eat. (he's very picky) limit dairy products, I use almond or coconut milk, and put flax meal in everything!! The flaxmeal really helps. You can put it in muffins, mix into burgers, sprinkle on cereal,etc......and lastly I watch him carefully. He he hasn't pooped in two and a half days we take a trip to Mc Donalds!! Laugh! but I works everytime. Otherwisw we avoid fast foods. Too much will work in reverse and bind them up. We use it as necessary and it's so funny but it works. I wonder if they'd want to use that in their commercials. Best of luck!

When we dealt with this we were giving our daughter fruit leathers thinking that the fruit would help, but it did not, it just contributed to the constipation. Real fruit or vegetables, apples and pears, potatoes, with the skins on, the skins have the fiber to help push the poo through. And lots of liquids. A couple brands of baby food, like Plumbaby have the prunes and plums in those squeeze packs that kids can just suck it out of the package - fun for kids. Whenever we use one of those we see at least some BM within a couple hours. Because of the back up it would really hurt our daughter to poo so we would try to encourage her to squat to poo (just like having a baby!) or distract her to look at magazines or watch a show on the laptop in order to get her to stay on the toilet as long as she needed to in order to have the BM. Also lots of holding hands and encouragement and explaining it will only hurt for a little bit and then she would feel better. We also had to avoid peas both with and without shells, for some reason those would constipate her more.

Good luck

Mirilax (but mine has such severe constipation she injures herself.) She's 21 months old.

She eats a lot of prunes, and that helps some...try that on her. I like to buy the Sunsweet "60 calorie packs" because they're snack packed (3 to a package) and that's a good serving, and they're always nice and tender.

I use Miralax for my daughter, who is 4. She's had some issues with fear of the potty and withholding stool for the past several months so now we are on a regimen of 1/4 capful of Miralax mixed in with a drink every day to every other day. I also make sure she has plenty of fresh fruits and veggies and whole grains for fiber and plenty of water to drink. When she first started running into a problem, I gave her 1/2 capful once to twice a day until she went. Too much will cause some too-soft stool so then you know to back off a little. But I would check with your pediatrician first as far as what dose to use. Sometimes it can take a day or 2 to work depending on how much you give.

This ongoing for my almost 3 year old. Daily fiber gummies 3 times a day, whole wheat bread, miralax every day (pediatrician recommended), plum juice, pears with the skin.............then I limit cheese and try to stay away from the binding "white" products. I feel for you and him............my little one strains and it is painful to watch him. Good luck.
