Dear Moms,

I have tried everything that I can think of to get my daughter who will be four in a couple of days to not be in a diaper at bed time. She has been potty trained for 1 1/2 now during the day, but at night is another issue. I have tried taking her to the bathroom every hour during the night and still accidents, I have limited the drinks to stop at 6pm. I have even tried the reward system and still accidents. I don't know if she is just a little late or if I should go see the doctor. We went about a year ago and he said there were no problems she just wasn't ready. Anyone have any other advice. I know she drinks a lot during the day, but so do I.

night time training is NOT a learned behavior. Keep her in diapers/pull ups and let her be until she wakes up dry for at least 4 nights. There is a chemical in the body that develops and helps the child to hold their pee or know to wake up. Without that chemical it won't matter what you do, they just can't do it.

Don't worry until they are 8 according to the doctors.

Afew months ago, I thought I had the answer. I would make my son go before bed, I'd take him before I went to bed, then I'd get him up around 3am, then he'd go as soon as he woke up. After awhile, we knocked out the 3am and he was fine. Then it started again. It has been a frustrating ride, especially since for the first year, he was trained at night. However, for the last three days, he has woken up by himself several times. On Friday, he woke up once. Saturday and Sunday twice. It has been such a relief because he too, will be four in December. So my advice, be as patient as possible (no matter how frustrating). It'll happen. =0)

I would say there is certainly nothing "wrong" with your daughter. Different children are ready for nighttime dryness at different ages, and I believe medically it is not considered delayed until age 6 or 7. My son is 6 and wears pull-ups every night, he has only recently had an occasional dry night, maybe dry once a week, so I am hopeful that he is starting to grow out of it. My daughter on the other hand has been dry at night since she potty trained at age 2, with only a few accidents along the way. Usually at this age it is not related to laziness or lack or understanding or desire, it is simply that their bodies are not ready. When her bladder is big enough and she begins secreting ADH in the evening ( a hormone that we make at night so we make less urine while we sleep), then she will start staying dry. I think it is just a matter of being patient.

I have a 5 1/2 year old who wears a pull up every night. She is a heavy sleeper and just doesn't get up..even when she wets the bed she sleeps right through it. So we keep buying the pull ups and hope that eventually she'll wake up dry. I don't think it's anything you can train, their bodies will figure it out eventually.
