Newborn Dislikes Car Rides

My 6 wk. old seems to hate car rides. She's been in the car at least 10 times. The majority of those times she has cried, screamed even, until we took her out of the car. A couple of times her diaper was wet (she hates wet diapers); however, I highly doubt a wet diaper has been the culprit each time. She cries so much we're afraid she'll pass out. Our singing or talking to her doesn't calm her. She is so caught up in her crying that she pays no attention to us or car music. Has anyone else experienced a baby who hates the car? We will have to go places, obviously, & I hate to just have her cry like that. We've tried a pacifier, she doesn't want it. She sucks her fist/thumb occasionally, but is still learning to use it to soothe herself. Any suggestions on what might be the problem, or suggestions on possible solutions? I think her temperature is okay, though the crying gets her hot & sweaty.... Thanks.

P.S. We have 2 carseats in the middle row of the suv so there is no way for one of us to sit back there next to her.

What can I do next?

I went through this with ds (5) and now our new baby. We found with ds that when he turned forward and was in the bigger seat, he was fine. My guess is that he was carsick. He tends to get nauseated when riding backwards on the train still. We used to take the train as much as possible because then he could at least be held for that time. We also went at naptimes on a full belly. I took Tylenol with me everywhere. Once in a while I would give him a dose. I figure I know I get a headache when I cry, he may too...

I have also tried pumping with the new baby and taking a bottle with us. Hasn't seemed to help yet.

My son was like that, too. He's almost 9 months now and he still doesn't really like car rides. He'll go short distances, but that's it. My husband and I will take turns riding in back with him. We have a backpack with toys in it that we only play with in the car. We also have a mirror that plays music and lights up. We found out one of the problems was that his newborn carseat (convertible) wasn't padded enough under his butt, so we switched car seats to the next stage. I think once he turns one and can face forward, it will be much better. For now, we just have to do the best we can. Sometimes we just have to let him cry.

My very spirited little girl did the same thing, the moment we took her home from the hospital, until we turned her around at her first b-day. She just hated being on her back (she ended up being a tummy sleeper, we tried, but she was born holding her neck up already). If my hubby drove, I sat in the back to entertain her (which helped), but I hated driving by myself, it was awful and stressful. We did everything too, pacifer, music, singing, I had to tune her out so I could drive. I wish I had solutions, but you were not alone!

My son hated car rides too. It turned out that he loathed his infant carseat, so he'd cry in the car, but when we arrived anywhere, I had to use the front carrier to cart him around instead of leaving him in the carseat and carrying that. As soon as he was out of it, he was fine. One thing I did that helped a little bit was to take some layers off in the car because like yours, he got sweaty after crying. Now that we've moved him to a convertible seat, backwards still, most of the time, he's ok!
