What about a meal with fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and other fixings ? I know it's not exactly the "standard" new years day meal but we've done it before (just with black eyed peas)and it was a great change !
Ladies, I'm sorry but I HATE HATE HATE black eyed peas. Cabbage is ok. We're kinda hammed out because that was Christmas dinner. Does anyone have some neat meal ideas for this new year? I have a new baby and we won't be going out but will have some friends over and would like to cook something festive and if possible a traditional new year meal...except that I truly dispise black eyed peas and would rather serve hot dogs than anything with them in it. Help would be greatly appreciated here. :)

There is a recipe on foodnetwork.com from Rachel Ray called Christmas Pasta. It has pancetta, ground pork, ground beef, and italian sausage in it. I made it for Christmas Eve and it is the best sauce EVER! Very special with the four kinds of meats. I made it the day before so the flavors could blend and reheated it. All I had to do was make the pasta..so easy. You could do a great salad with goat cheese, cranberries, walnuts, tomatoes and a raspberry vinaigrette and garlic bread. Red wine optional! Everyone in my family raved!! If that's not the one, do chicken saltimbocca also on foodnetwork.com by giada. Pound out chicken flat and layer prosciutto, spinach, and parmesan cheese. It is also a "wow" meal! good luck!

I'm original from Ohio. It's tradition to have pork and saurkrat on New Years Day. I usually get a pork loin, salt and pepper it and lay it on a bed of saurkrat and bake it in the oven.
Good Luck!
I know you "hate hate hate" blakeyed peas, so I'm not suggesting them. This is just what my family has for New Years. My mother always makes our New Year's day meal and 90% of the time, it includes black eyed peas made 2 ways (traditional simmered with leftover ham and hambone from Christmas and Hopping John [spicy rice, ham and blakeyed pea casserole]- my husband's absolute favorite), cabbage, macaroni and cheese for the kids (homemade of course), steamed rice and a big delicious tureen of beef stew. I have not been able to replicate her stew recipe to date, and I've tried many times. She must be leaving a step out or something when she tells me how she does it. LOL Anyway, her stew is the best and we always look forward to it on New Years Day! Good luck finding a new tradition for your family!
Blessings,

In the north (I lived in Ohio for close to 10 years) they celebrate with spare ribs. Or...my ex's family did. That was there tradition.
AND...you can throw them in a crock pot and let them cook all day (or turn up the heat and cook them for a couple of hours) and add some fried potatoes (or bake them if you're so inclined) or a nice wild rice pilaf and some veggie medley.
Or...Order Pizza.
Happy New Year to you!
we usually have stuffed cabbage rolls and black eyed peas cooked with breakfast sausage..u cant even taste the blach eyed peas..cuz i too hate them..if you want the exact recipe let me know..also you can make cowboy caviar ..no it does not have caviar in it..its just country terminology..and you eat it with tortilla chips or crackers..good appetizer
what about some turkey or brisket with mashed potatoe ,macaroni and chesse and new year day brisket sandwiches
We usually roast a prime rib.
I do have the peas BUT, I am the only one in the family that likes them. I make Texas Cavier with them (served room temp in a vinegar/oil type dressing)
We like potatoes, sometimes I bake, sometimes I do the mashed to go with the sauce for the prime rib. I make something green as in green beans, salad or something to that effect.
We are not as traditional on New Years Eve/Day but we make it fun. This year NYE will be our 21st anniversary!
I don't have much in the works for my plans right now because my 15 yr old is in bed with stomach virus and I'm assuming we will be next.
Happy New Year!
