New to Downtown Miami, Temporarily

My husband has to travel to Miami for business the entire month of July. We live outside of Philadelphia, PA. Just last night, my 19 month old daughter and I decided to travel with him and rent a condo for the month. I do not know anything about the area. I am looking for activities to do with my daughter during the day. I am afraid I will get bored being away from home for a whole month! We are also looking for a fully furnished condo to rent close to downtown and Brickell Key (starting in two weeks, yikes!) I would love any recommendations on things to do and places to go with a 19 month old active toddler.

What can I do next?

Hi Jen! There are lots of things to do in Miami! Near downtown, you can go over to Key Biscayne and take her to a a few different beaches they have there. They have Crandon Beach, Virginia Key, and Bill Baggs (way at the end). There is a new waterpark for the little ones (of the the 836/dolphin expressway and 37th Ave) called Grapeland. It is free for kids under 2 or 3 and adults are like 7 dollars or so. Wednesdays are free (I wouldn't go that day).
There is a new indoor restaurant/play gym for parents and kids called Cool de Sac at a mall called Sunset Place. This is on U.S.1 and sw 57th Ave (Red Rd). The place is 6 bucks or so to get it and your daughter can play while you grab a bite. Or you can play with her. Very cute place!!
Another indoor activity is the Miami Children's Museum which is on the way to Miami Beach. And across the street from the musuem is Parrot Jungle Island (outdoors). Another place on Key Biscayne is the Seaquarium.
And you can always go over to Miami Beach to experience that beach. I don't like it as much for kids.
Another fun place I like is called Pinecrest Gardens. It is is in an area called Pincrest. They have a splash and play there, a petting zoo, a playground, and it is very pretty.
Miami also has lots of little parks around. I just think it is so hot though and I prefer to be inside or by water.
I don't know of too much to do downtown with your daughter. YOu can go to Bayside mall but, be careful there. I almost got my purse stolen there.

I hope this helped a little!!!! If you want more info let me know but, I have a feeling you will get a bunch of responses.
Best of Luck,
M.

There's no way to get bored down here ... the beaches are FABULOUS and I recommend Crandon Park for little ones because it has very fine sand and when the tide is out, the water is EXTREMELY shallow (a few inches deep) and it's great for toddlers to play.

We have a great children's museum which is full of tactile learning experiences, a world-renowned zoo, and more. It's a great city.

If it's rainy, you can always hop on the metrorail and go to Dadeland mall ... I believe there is a Gymboree there that has toddler classes. ALso, check MeetUp and see if there are any groups meeting in the Brickell area. Brickell Key is very high-end and is adjacent to Miami's financial district.

Have fun and pack your Spanish dictionary as it is, in many places, the language of choice in our magical city. Buena suerte!!!

There are many park activies in Miami Beach area. Also Flamingo Park as a small child friendly FREE water park pool.
The beach is also very nice here...hot but if you go early or late in the day it's lovely.

Hi!! Well there are lots of fun stuff to do with a toddler down here. Because of the great weather there's always the beach and plenty of parks to choose from. For more specific activities, there's a new water park they opened for kids not to far from where you plan to stay. They also have a place in Coconut Grove where you pick already made pottery and they give you the paint and you make your own work of art. Then of course there's Chuck E. Cheese, you can never go wron with that. If you need any more info. you can email me at ____@____.com. Enjoy your stay!!

downtown miami is close to everything :-)
you can go to miami beach, coral gables, coconut grove!

I would check out the various public libraries for activites, story hours, etc.

also there are MY GYM classes- there's one in Coral Gables

you can also explore many neighborhood parks, etc.
It is HOT HOT HOT (but isn't in in PA, lol?!)so you might find you limit your outdoor activities to early morning and late(r) afternoon...

enjoy our city!
I love it!

I see this request is older, but strangely enough, my husband has been traveling down to Miami periodically and I live outside of Philadelphia :)

When I went with my three year old to visit in January, we went to the Aquarium and my favorite was Jungle Island. We also went to the Children's Museum, which is very good and right across from Jungle Island. And of course the beaches can't be beat - just be sure to take lots of wipes and changes of clothes as I found bathrooms very scarce (it could be I just didn't know what I was doing!)

Best of luck and hope you were able to find a condo!
