Never Ending Periods!

I had my first baby on November 1 of this year, had a very normal delivery and had no tears or problems at all. I went for my 6 week check up on Dec. 10 and was given the "mini-pill" for birth control since I am breast feeding. I started taking it that day and then 2 or 3 days later started spotting a little bit. I was told that would happen, so I had no worries. I then had a regular period on the 19th, complete with heavy and light bleeding and cramps. I am now (on the 30) having what I think is another period. The only thing I can think is that this mini-pill is the problem, and was curious if any one else has experienced this problem. I plan on calling my Dr. in the morning but firgured I'd ask here too. I was told that I probably wouldn't even get a period until I'm done nursing and to get two in a week is sooo frustrating!! I'm more than willing to go off this pill if it turns out to be the issue, but wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong first!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called my Dr. and they took me off the pill, they claim that having several periods a month or severe spotting is a sign that it's not working properly. I have decided to do without anything, since the pill was not working and I was told by tons of people that mirena can also decrease milk supply. I have noticed that since I've stopped the mini-pill my milk has increased dramatically!! My hubby and I will just try other ways of protection!! Thanks so much for all the great advice

Hi A.,
I had the same problem. My doctor prescribed the mini pill for me after I had my daughter in September and I had a regular period and as well as spotting for the entire next month. I eventually couldn't take it any more( nor could my husband) and stopped taking them. It was strange to me because I had previously been on the regular pill and tolerated it just fine but was concerned about more weight gain and wanted to try the mini pill. It just made life unbearable for me so back to the regular pill I went with a diet in tow.

A.,

I had all kinds of problems on the mini pill and i'm pretty sure i quit taking it about 3 months after i started. One thing my dr. told me is that you have to take it exactly the same time everyday. It's really sensitive to that but if your like me, my body can't handle low dose birth control pills. I just can't take them I end up spotting or having 2 periods a month. I also think it lowered my milk supply but that may have had nothing to do with the pill. I would say you should definately call your dr. but i know anytime you start a new pill you have to give your body at least 3 months to fully adjust to it. But it never worked for me. Everyone is different though. I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck!

It could just be your body trying to regulate itself on this birth control.B/c you just had a baby I wouldn't be to concerned right now, and like the PP I say give it a couple of months and see it this continues.Your body is going through tons of changes so give it some time to adjust.

H8i A. Congrats on your new bundle of joy! Well I read what happen to you and i would just like to sayu that I used to take pills and I ened up having 4 blood clots on my lungs. I was only taking them to make my cycles regular. But as a result of the pills i can no longer take any type of birth control pills because of the hormones. I can only get a IUD. So be careful eith taking the pills.

You can get your period while breastfeeding! It is more unlikely that you will, but it is very common for women to go ahead and resume having periods. I am on the mini pill and my first period after baby lasted almost 2 weeks. Call your Dr. and see what they say. Just know that having a period while breastfeeding is normal!

With both my girls I started my period before I stopped nusrsing. Nursing doesn't always mean no period. I don't take birth control so I can not comment on that. Good Luck.

I'm a big, big fan of the Minerna IUD. It's covered by most insurance and now, as a 38 year old woman, I only spot. I started it in June. If I want to get pregnant, I just have it removed and I can start right away. Low hormone dosage, NO FUSS, and nothing to remember makes it a really great alternative!

Good luck

I am on Mirena. I LOVE IT!

I have very little flow when I have my periods. They say in some people it can completely stop your period.

My only beef is I spot. and spot, and spot, and spot. I can go 3 weeks spotting, and get a week panty liner free until I get another dose of spotting. It's worth it though. Really, really, worth it.

Yes, that is typical. I couldn't wait to get off that pill. My doctor said she only prescribes it to nursing moms because it is a low dose.

If you can do something else - I would highly recommend not doing any birth control until you finish breast feeding. Despite what is said - it can have an impact on your milk supply. Every person is different. I have endometriosis and was told the Mirena was my solution - it was a nightmare. Be aware of what your insurance will pay on it as well. They consider out patient surgery and will charge to put it in as well as take it out.

The same thing happened to me with my pills!! I would spot (break through bleeding) every month AND have a normal period. They changed the dosage a couple of times and I even went through about 5 or 6 different brands of pills. It was a LONG LONG 6 year processes and they eventually told me that I was going to have to "deal with it". Make sure that you are taking your pill at the same time every day!! My advice would be - come off of the pill for now if you can do that. You can always try them after you're done nursing. Good luck.

as hormones flux and sleep paterns differ it is not abnormal for you to have now and then bleeding while soley breastfeeding. Thus the mini pill is affecting your hormones and most likey the cause.
You need to be nursing atleast 60 minutes per day to keep your hormones low enough to not ovulate.

Also sometimes if women have really tramatic births or trouble with breatfeeding this can add to the hormone instability and thus more prone to irratic bleeding.

As a Doula and homebirther I take and recommend liquid chloraphyl to pregnant women and new moms... and women in general! It is great for overall health but the cool thing is it helps us to not bleed as much after birth. so it not only cuts down on postpartum bleeding but also with keeping the bleeding at bay while your hormones adjust- you can get it at brighter day =-)

If you need ANYTHING just let me know!...M.

Hi A., I had a similar problem with after my first child. My doctor ended up giving me a D&C. Have you been back to the doctor or expressed your concern?

Hey A. M! I am also a mom of one (he's 2 1/2) and I have been on the mini-pill since he was six weeks old. What you are dealing with is common, from what I understand. I do know that I have to take mine at the same time each day ( I take mine before bed) because if I don't, I am almost guaranteed to start the next day. This is most often the case if anyone I know is on her period around the time I miss a pill, I guess because of the pharamones? Anyway, I have stayed on the mini-pill for this long and I was able to breastfeed much longer than I ever planned on! Also, I was told the mini pill makes getting pregnant the next time easier because you're not dealing with re-regulating your hormones. I figure, we're trying again in the next six months, so I might as well stay on it! Hope this helped!
