My nephews first communion is coming up. I am his godmother and so I will of course be attending. Now I am not catholic, so I am not sure how these things work. So I am hoping someone can help me. Do I get him a gift and if so, suggestions would be great. Thank you!
It need not be a religious gift at all, but it can be.
I would gravitate toward something more that denoted his step in adulthood if you aren't comfortable getting something religious (which can be pretty personal). Diary, Itunes gift card, tie and jacket or the ever popular cash/card/bond.

Money always works, with a nice card. I wouldn't get him a Bible because churches often provide them as part of their religious instruction or Confirmation classes. If you do want to go the religious gift route, a personalized photo frame is nice where he could put a photo of the two of you or him with both godparents. My boys got watches from my parents and money from everyone else. We gave them the personalized photo frames to remember the day.
He's going to get lots of rosaries and Christian themed gifts. I gave my nephew $50. He loved it.
Gifts are often given, but are not required. Some people give religious gifts, but since you yourself are not Catholic, it is fine to give something that is meaningful to him or to the both of you. Money is also popular in some families.

Yes! You should definitely get him a gift, especially as you are the godmother but even if you were not. We are attending my nephew's first communion this weekend and we bought him a gift as well. Neither my husband nor myself are godparents to him, but if you attend an event that is a milestone in a child's life I believe a gift is warranted. We bought him a boy's silver dogtag that also has a black and silver cross on the chain with it. The dogtag we had engraved with the date of the event. Go to family Christian book store or Hobby Lobby/Mardel which are Christian based. They could probably help you find a small appropriate gift.
When I went to my cousin's baby's baptism, I bought an ornament in the shape of a cross with the child's name on it. I actually found it at a Hallmark store.
