Nelson Mandela

1990, for me, I would consider a rebirth of sorts. I met my future husband in a play we were both cast in, and I learned how powerful the entire history of South Africa was to become for me. The arts, in particular, had a huge impact on me, namely the work of South African playwright Athol Fugard. Since then, the history of this beautiful country, and in particular, the majesty of Mr. Nelson Mandela, always left me wanting only the best for him and for his people.

Today, we all learned that this beautiful soul passed on. On the one hand, I am glad his ailing body is no longer hurting. On the other, I am tremendously sorry that he could not live on forever.

For me, and for so many others, he was indeed our Tata.

Rest in Peace Madiba. Your spirit will live on!

Sometimes being healed means getting rid of an ailing body. Sad sad sad that he's gone but his legacy will last forever.

Thank you this post. Janice B. Well said.

My dance company had a dance tribute to him 20 years ago. I still recall that choreography.

I cried this morning. I hope South Africa can heal.

He certainly affected the entire world in a major way. He was a major advocate for equality and peace. So much of what he had to say was very hard to hear, but it was all truth. That's what made him real... the honesty and willingness to speak the truth without whitewashing it.

Thank you for the post! Indeed, Mandela's life and accomplishments are inspiring. Based on the history and all the rules of logic, South Africa should have descended into civil war and massive bloodshed. Yet it did not. He miraculously managed to lead that deeply divided nation into a new era where many problems still exist, yet things are still so hopeful. Truly, he embodied the power of reconciliation. Would that all leaders could be so wise and effective!

If you haven't seen the film Invictus (Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman, double home run!), I highly recommend it. Inspiring indeed.
