Hello,

We are researching moving from IL to AZ. I think I pretty much am leaning towards Gilbert as the town we would live in. This is based on suggestions from others. I am still curious about Chandler though. My husbands job would be in Chandler.

What is the big differences between Chandler and Gilbert? Can anyone recommend a couple subdivisions to consider looking into for comparison purposes?

We have an 11 year old daughter and 1 year old son. We are planning on having one more baby before we move too. We want to be in an area that we can grow with. We will most likely want to get settled and then a few years down the road move into a more permanent home without having to switch areas and schools.

Thank you!

What can I do next?

Both areas are great. I live in North Chandler. I love that I can get to Tempe, Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler, etc. in minutes. As far as family, both are very family friendly.

Chandler has older areas. I live in an older area by choice, as my husband and I wanted more space and the older homes seem to be less ontop of one another.

We live in Chandler in a subdivision called "Mays Pond" which is a smaller part of "Gila Springs" We absolutely love it!!! There are two huge lakes and a great park and jogging path/bike path between the two. Lots of kids in a very safe and neighborhood watch type area! We've been here 2 years and I can't imagine going anywhere else - amazing school district is why we chose the area:)

Chandler is right next to Gilbert and the two towns are practically identical. Similar in size, neighborhoods, schooling, stores, etc. I live in Chandler and love it, and my sister lives in Gilbert and loves it. There are tons of great neighborhoods here, both gated and not.

We moved here 5 years ago and live in Gilbert. I think Gilbert and Chandler are quite similar in many respects but Chandler is older and has some areas that are a bit more run-down/rougher but has a very cute "historic district". Many of the homes and schools in Gilbert tend to be newer; but, of course, there are nicer areas and rougher areas in every town.

Chandler and Gilbert border each other, so your husband could work in Chandler and you could live in Gilbert and still be closer to work than living in a further area of Chandler. Both areas have some very good public schools, some not so great.

You might check out www.greatschools.net. I found that site VERY useful when we were deciding where to live and am very pleased with the public elementary school where we live (Quartz Hill.) School comparisons played a large part in deciding where we wanted to buy a house. Good Luck!

Be sure and check into property taxes. I'm not sure about C., but I know Gilbert is among the highest in the state.

I have lived in Chandler and Gilbert. I love Gilbert and liked Chandler. Gilbert is a very family oriented town with a nice 'down town' area. I grew up in a small city in Michigan and Gilbert is very much like it. The schools in the Chandler Unified School district usually get pretty good ratings. Go to www.greatschools.net and you can find more info on the schools. While my address is Gilbert, our home school district is in the Chandler District (we live that close to the Chandler city line). I love the school calendar Chandler has, they get 2 weeks off every 10 (2 weeks in October, December, March) and summer break is 7-8 weeks long. There really wasn't anytime for my son to get bored this summer (he's in 1st grade now) and many studies have shown that kids lose a lot of what they've learned over summer break. A short summer break means the teachers don't have to spend a lot of time reviewing what was learned the previous year. I agree that if you can, live as close to work as you can. Traffic here can be terrible durning rush hour. Good luck with your move.

We live in Chandler and love it! I've never lived in Gilbert, so I can't comment on it, but I can tell you that Chandler is great. I also believe the school system in Chandler is better (I was a teacher before I had my son). Good luck with your search!

I live in South Chandler and love it. Chandler has great schools. Hamilton High School is one of the best in the state and great elementary schools too. There are tons of parks, close to freeways, shopping and everything else. I was born and raised in South Tempe AZ and have lived in Chandler for almost 7 years and I don't plan on moving anytime soon. Also, the city pools are amazing and there are a ton of city programs. Chandler has also been named one of the best 100 communities for young people. In 2008 Tempe and Scottsdale were also named. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.

We are from WI and have lived in both Gilbert and Chandler. We lived in Gilbert near Ray Rd and Cooper Rd. for 6 years and now live in Chandler near Ocotillo Rd and Cooper Rd. We moved about 5 miles south and have lived here for 5 years. We are in Cooper Corners West. I would say that there is not much of a real difference between the two cities. The property taxes are lower in Chandler because there is more industry to offset the costs of the city. Actually we have lived within 1 mile of the border between Gilbert and Chandler in both homes. Chandler does year round schools while Gilbert is still on the older system of having 3 months off for the summer. Our daugher is only 2, so I don't really know too many details about the schools. I have heard that our neighborhood is more desired than most since our kids go to the San Tan Elementry School which ranks quite high. Also we are about 2-3 miles from Hamilton High School.

The homes in our area are medium to large and can easily accomodate a family of 5. I would say we don't have many "starter" homes. Some have basements which are not very common in AZ. I would say that you really want to try to be close to work if you can arrange it. Traffic can be quite bad depending on where you are going.

We are also only about 3 miles from Tumbleweed park and about 8 miles from San Tan Mall and Chandler Mall.

I can give you so much more information if you want to contact me directly. I also have a good friend who is a real estate agent if you have not already found one to work with. Just let me know.

I totally disagree with the person on not liking Gilbert. GILBERT is AMAZING!!! Child and family based. It is an amazing well rounded place for a family. I moved here from Newport Beach and although it was an adjustment, it is home and we love it. Please look at the website www.greatschools.net it is an amazing website that you can compare school (facts) to each other and you can see what percent receives free lunch, level of education for the teachers, test scores or the average class size. Gilbert has the only blue ribbon school in all of Arizona Highland High. I went to greatschools.com to narrow down what school districts I wanted to look for houses in. I probably spent ten hours a week on this site and it paid off. Please compare schools before you buy. I hope you make a decision based on your feelings alone, as everyone has an opinion (good or bad). Welcome to Arizona=0)
