Neighborhood Block Party??

We live in a neighborhood where all of the houses have large lots and are very spaced apart, no sidewalks, and few small children. I am wondering your ideas/suggestions for starting an annual neighborhood "block party"? We know most of our neighbors on our street and would probably invite several from around the corner too (I think it's still our "subdivision".) We have a pretty mixed group as far as ages - maybe 50% of the houses are seniors with only the one couple, 25% families with bigger kids (college and HS) and 25% grade school and younger.

I would appreciate ideas of what has worked in your neighborhood!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

we have ours the Sat after Labor Day, as most people are home for the summer at that point. A flier was delivered door to door, someone knows a dj who works for tips. We don't organize the food part every one does their own. My neighbor solicits a few gift certificate donations and we play Mom's musical chairs, kids musical chairs, tug o' war, everyone brings water balloons for a water ballon toss, the kids decorate their bikes for a bike parade and we had the firs dept. send out a firetruck for the kids to explore. Someone brings the bean bag game and others bring ladder ball. I would suggest you stay away from the bouncy - jumpy things it is hard to control so many kids and keep a safe number on their at one time. We don't deal with any collection of money. Some people offer up some sort of entertainment on their own dime if they choose to.

It is a lot of fun! So make a flier pass it out and it will get bigger and better every year! Good Luck!

First yiu have to notify the village or township you're in. Send (door to door) inviations to the block party to everyone invited. Add a post script about a "block party meeting" at your place or convenient coffee shop to discuss who brings what so that costs are shared by the number of people and children coming evenly. A single person pays 1 amounnt; a family of 6 pays 6 times that amount. Descide how many grills you need, charcoal, container of gas for grill if cooking all day, drinks, food plates and napkins, plastic forks, knives, spoons, plastic glasswear bags of ice, garbage bags, etc. There's a lot of prep but always fun. Happy Mothers Day.

Sounds like you live in my subdivision! I just organized our subdivisions 1st garage sale and it looks like we are going to have a great turn out! What I did was print out a letter w/ the dates & times w/ my phone # and email and asked those who wanted to do it to contact me.I put them on all the mail boxes in my subdivision. This was 2 weeks ago and 16 people have already said they would love to do this and what a great idea! We have decided to have a block party the night of the last day of the garage sale and so many people are coming. I think it just takes 1 person to get the ball rolling :-).If you want to get to know more people you could go door to door. If you have a friend in your sub maybe you could split the work. Good luck!

due to todays economy you may want to keep it low on price. our neighborhood has a block party every year and we have done 10-20 dollars per household to cover the meat- and beverages- we ask for everyone to bring something and in the past they rented a moonwalk and charged $5 per child. we have a volley ball net set up- as neighbors we all pull together- one neighbor does all the organizing and just gives out jobs. good luck and have fun
