Need Tricks

I am working on a craft for a birthday party, but I have run into some glitches.

How do you get the glue off of a glass jar that is left by the label stickers?

Is there any kind of glue that I can put in the seal of the jar to make it water tight? I have rubber cement, but haven't tried it yet. gorilla Glue did not work. It expands and leaks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I used cooking oil, and then grease cutting dish soap. I had to do a lot of scraping with my fingernails, but I didn't break a nail, so it wasn't excessive. All the jars are clean and ready for the party! (I did do one more to try the peanut butter. It worked fine.)

For sealing, I used silicone. Michael's DID NOT have it, even though it was on their website, but I found it next door at Target in the Hardware department for $2.99! The party is done and all is good. Thank you everyone for all your help.

For the glue residue outside the jar - if soaking in hot soapy water didn't work you could try WD40. It takes off lots of kinds of glue.

For sealing the jar lid, what about a silicone glue like what's used in aquariums?

I realize you already solved your sticker problem, but for future reference, the best trick I have is using a hair dryer to "reactivate" the glue on the sticker and for the most part it peels right off. Then rubbing alcohol takes care of any residual adhesive.

A product called UNDO will take the glue off. Walmart, will have this product.

goo gone to get the sticky sticker residue off..and, funny as it sounds...peanut butter works too. just take a bit on your finger, and rub it into the sticky stuff. that'll break it up, then you can just wipe it off and wash it. silicone to seal the lid. good luck!

I swear by a product called "Goo Gone". It works like a charm, and even has a pleasant smell (citrus/orange). You can get this at Target, most grocery and hardware stores in the cleaner section. It comes in a clear plastic bottle with a black label. There is also a spray version.

Try bathroom caulk to seal your jar. It is designed to seal out moisture between tiles and tubs...why not jars?

Using a hot glue gun will make it air/water tight. Also, let the jars soak in scalding hot water - the glue comes right off.

Baby oil should take the sticker off. Use plumbing silicone for the seal.

Goo Gone works great. You can get it at any hardware store (even Walgreens sells it) Deals on Brown Deer Rd has it for $1. Call to be sure they have some. You need to use a silicone to seal the jar. I can't think of a brand off hand. Michaels sells it and Menards has it. It does smell.
Hope this helps.

Blessings!

Get some goo gone for the sticky label...It is available at most hardware stores. If you cannot find it, lighter fluid will do the same thing...Make sure you wash them very well after using either.

As far as the glue goes, I used hot glue gun glue when we made snow globes. I don't know what you are making, but I do know that the Family Fun Magazine web site has lots of good advice for craft projects...

Good Luck

I am unsure on your second question, but as to the first, get some Goo Gone Sticker Lifter. You can find it at Ace Hardware or Menards (probably other stores as well). You put a little of the Goo Gone liquid over the sticker or glue left under it and then let it soak in a bit. Using the plastic sticker lifter, you should be able to fully remove the label and the glue underneath. Works like a charm for me!
