Need Tips for Giving Eye Drops!

My 3.5 yr old son has pink eye and I'm having a heck of a time getting the eye drops in his eye. He refuses to let me do it so now it's taking two people to do this so one can hold him down while the other puts in the drops. He closes his eyes so tight that they're still not really getting inside. And of course he's screaming his head off, too. Does anybody have any experience with this and know of something I can try?

What can I do next?

At 3 1/2, this might not work...I know my 3 1/2 year old would still put up a fight....but it may be worth a try. When my little one was younger, she had pink eye too. THe Dr. told us to lay her down, have her closer her eyes, then put the drop in the corner of her eyes and have her open them. This will get the eye drops into her eyes, and it did work! I don't know if it would work now, but still worth a shot! Hope it helps! You could always try bribing him too!

Good luck!

Not sure why the doctor didn't give you an ointment instead of drops (it's so much easier) You may want to call back your Dr. and ask for the ointment. The other trick that works is to have your son look at your and pull down the pouch under his eye let a drop fall in that way. It's much better than trying to lay them down to do it. Hope this helps!

My tip was the same as the one where the child closes their eyes and put a drop in the corner of the eye (by the nose) while their eyes are closed. I have had two young ones with pink eye last year and this seemed to work. Unfortunately I can't say that they were really willing, but my 3 year old did much better than my 2 year old with it. Once the drop is by their eye you need to get them to blink to get the drop to go into their eye. You will be able to see it mostly all go in so you know it worked. Good luck!

You could have him lay down on his side and look down toward the bed. Then you could put the drop on the corner of his eye that he's not looking toward. Does that make sense? I hate drops in my eyes, but if I can't see the med bottle near my eye, I'm ok. Maybe if your son is not looking directly at it he might be a little more willing.

Either that or tell him that if he doesn't his eyes will get sick and fall out. That's how I got my 2 year old son to brush his teeth.
